Reading these forums, checking on notebookcheck.com and a few other sites I think it has been determined that the 512mb 8600m GT will be ddr2. However I've spoke with two people, one by phone and one on their live help desk. Below is a short conversation:
Help Desk: Welcome to our live chat service. May I have your customer number so I can better help you?
you: hello?
Help Desk: hi, can i have your customer# please
you: I haven't purchased yet. I must have clicked for tech support, I was looking for sales but you can probably answer this quick. Do any of your current notebooks that are 8600m gt come with ddr3 or are they all ddr2?
Help Desk: its DDR3
Help Desk: most of the video cards now are DDR3 if its 7 or 8 series
you: for the x5-7900?
Help Desk: yes it should be.
you: I've been looking around on notebook forums for weeks and have been told only the asus has the ddr3 8600m gt
you: and also was told by dell tech support there is no ddr3 in the 512mb model
you: is there a chance you could confirm this?
Help Desk: yes its confirmed that its a DDR3
you: thanks that's great news. I'll go ahead and order then.
Help Desk: Is there anything else I can help you with today?
you: Can't go wrong with the 7 day money back if it isn't![]()
you: nope thanks
Help Desk: Thank you for using Cyberpower's LivePerson chat service. Have a good day!

So I have ordered and will see. Should I get my hopes up? I really would prefer the gddr3 card but I don't think it even exists.

i think that everyone thought it was a gddr3 but it probably isnt. Rivatuner also shows the sager, pnb, xotic versions as gddr3 but we all know that it is gddr2.

gddr3/ddr2 does not matter. The memory clock speeds are what you should be asking about. The GeForce 8600m GT that comes with the asus g1s has the memory clocked at 700mhz, as advertised on nvidia's site. The compal ifl90 has the memory clocked at 400mhz. Same with dell. That is why it most likely is ddr2.

gddr3 is basically more efficient and cooler hence it can clock at 700 mhz. thats why it is gddr3 and compal's is ddr2
