Finally got around to trying to back up my documents onto a DVD on my 6130HS20 Notebook and can't find a way to get the DVD unit to burn the DVD. I can do CD's fine, but I have 2.5 GB of data I need to back up and want to use a DVD. Anybody have advice on this? I checked the manual online and it said that I need to buy DVD burning software. Is this correct? I can't believe it. Everything else about this unit met my expectations but this is a surprise.

AFAIK, you have that software on your PC already. I do. It's PowerProducer by Cyberlink.

The issue I have is that it doesn't seem to be recognizing the drive as a DVD burner.

I have an issue with my burner as well. It skips. I burned a Data dvd and when I tried to pull the data off on the same dvd burner, I got a bad crc. Maybe it was a fluke. I have backed up two movies (legally) and both skip every 30 seconds. very weird. Never had this problem. Anyone else?

I've burnt about 10 movies and a few data disc and I haven’t had any real problems so far. I have to burn all my movies at 2.4x just cause my friends DVD players and mine doesn’t seem to be able to read the disc properly at 4x, some work and some don’t at 4x but all of them work at 2.4x.

As for data I have only burnt a few discs so far but I haven’t encountered any problems with them. I burnt a few disc with avi files and they all play back fine on my laptop.

I've been using Nero 6.6 and DVD shrink to do all my burning, so it might be worth a try to see if it’s the DVD burner or the software you’re using that is giving you the errors.

I too tried to do a big backup (before I reformatted the other day) and the Powerstarter wouldn't burn to a DVD because, "Some paths or filenames are too long". I googled that and apparently there are programs out there that support long filenames, but the pre-installed one does not. Doesn't do much good then, does it? Windows doesn't support DVD burning yet, but the new longhorn version supposedly will.

Yea, tried again with a few diff media types and stillg et the same krap, skips and what not. Used nero and dvdshrink as well. The best I got was very few skips till the end of the movie and it was un-watchable at that point. Used 4 diff brands of media and speeds, I don't know what else to do/try. The cdr works flawlessly. But the dvdr seems useless. Least for movies. Any suggestions before I put this laptop on ebay?!?!?! In lieu of something smaller with better battery life.

Yeah it looks like it's the burner that’s causing the problems. With you trying 4 different kinds of media and software it seems that the only thing that could be causing the problems is the burner itself. At this point the only real options are to get it fixed or replaced. The drive is removable so you could conceivably buy another drive and stick it in but that would probably cost too much to be worth it.

    addidas...

I replaced my cd burner with a nice panasonic slot loading DVD-RAM burner, and have ZERO problems with it. I got it from newegg for under 125 bucks!

Have ya tried calling support and seeing if they will replace the burner?

Finally got a trial version of NERO. It worked. so the net cost of this product in C$ was 1699 for the unit (plus tax) + wireless card (C$79) + Nero DVD burning software (~C$100). Hmmm.... wonder what I could have got for C$1880?

Sorry for the delay, work..ya know?

it's a sweet internal DVD burner that loads and ejects the disks like a car cd player...really looks quality...and with the 6130. its better cause the power plug is right next to the cd tray. It's not the fastest burner around...only 4x burneing...but it IS DVD RAM capable, which is very handy for those serious file backups (not to mention it came with a double sided DVD-RAM like 8+ gigs storage!)

Does anyone use their 6130HS-20 to make DVD's from their digital video camera? I just bought a JVC camera and have been trying to make DVD to send to family members. I'm convinced at this point that I will have to buy some decent burning software. I would like to edit the movie with Windows Movie Maker, then burn the movie to a DVD that my folks could play on their player. If anyone does this, could you please tell me what software you use, and what brand/type of media. I understand that the quality of the blanks matters a lot with DVD's. I think the slimline burner in this thing will support 4x DVD+R, 2x DVD-R, 2x DVD+RW. Which do you use, and how long does it take to burn?

    Thanks much.

If you're just simply burning data, here is a free application (outside of gnu ports of free stuff, which I can point you at if you want to know...there's a guy that has an AWESOME site out there that is world reknown for doing all sorts of cool stuff with .iso generation).

I use this all the time at work for burning .iso and creating stuff if I need to. I ahven't had time to get into really cool DVD burning, but after I get my home network migrated and my new fileserver up and data gathered onto it, I plan to investigate it more.

    anyhow...

I don't believe there to be any spy/ad/mal ware on it.

When I burn data to dvd's, I use the Maxell high grade video dvd+r.
You can buy them at walmart for 5.97 for a 3 pack and yes that is expensive for 3 but they have an anti scratch surface and so far they have worked flawlessly with this burner. I use Nero to burn my data to dvd's.

    I personally have greatly expanded my DVD collection since I got my 6130. I get whatever movie and do 2 things;
    a) run a program called "DVD Decrypter"...pretty self explanitory what that does.
    b) take the decrypted files (if the above found it scrambled) or just run the DVD thru "DVD Shrink". This allows you to clean and parts of the movie (like the previews...gag) and fit a good quality copy on a regular DVD.

Now, the DVD Shrink work seemless thru Nero, which I got with the Panasonic slot-loader I upgraded this rig to.

If this sounds like something your wanting to spend time doing, go check out http://www.doom9.net/ .

    Happy burning!!

Thanks a lot for the replies. I've got nero 6 on the way. I found it for $8 including shipping at 5dollarsoftware.com. It is supposedly an OEM edition with no documentation, I'll let everyone know if I got ripped off or not.

I was having trouble getting the movies off the video camera with the USB cable, but it works great with the firewire cable. A huge plus for this laptop that it has a firewire port. I can use windows moviemaker for capturing and editing, so the lame software my camera came with is now deleted. If anyone gets a camera, a firewire cable(4port) is a must.

When using DVD Shrink, you can make the output into an .iso file and burn it using DVD Decrypter. Then you do not have to buy additional software. CDBurnerXP and Deepburner are both free burning programs. They work well for basic burning tasks like making audio CDs, and data DVDs and CDs.

Update: The version of Nero I received for $5 is a special version that does not support DVD burning. Basically I got ripped off. Don't buy the Nero 6 OEM Suite from 5dollarsoftware.com

    Greetings,

I suppose you using Active@ ISO Burner freeware tool to burn ISO to discs. This small utility is very easy to use and reliable.
