My 6214W came back from RMA 2 weeks ago with a replaced motherboard.
I booted it quickly at work to see if it worked and saw no problem but when I came home it didn't boot correctly.
In bios before launching vista it gave me an error that said something like "incorrect time/date" with two choices : either reboot(i think) or go to bios setup.
In bios the time was like : 00:00:15 and date was wrong. So I put the correct time and date and it rebooted correctly.
However a couple of boots later I had the exact same problem. I was away all weekend and again when I came back : same problem.
It seems as though when the A/C adapter is not plugged in and the laptop is "off" I get this problem when I turn it on.
I'm thinking it could be the motherboard battery that's dead but then again it's supposed to be a new motherboard...
Any ideas?

Hmm, that does sound like a CMOS problem. Perhaps the board has a jumper setting that clears the CMOS and the factory accidentally left that set? Or maybe a physical button on the system that resets the CMOS is stuck? It does seem odd that a brand new board would already have a dead battery, but other than it being reset by a function of the board, that's all I could think of that would account for it losing the time whenever it's unplugged and shut off.

There should be a Lithium coin cell in the memory compartment (see photo in my 6024W review). Check that it is there and then, if you have a battery tester, check if the voltage is OK. The cell should be 3V BR1225 or equivalent.

I can check if there's a battery but I don't have any battery testers unfortunately. I'll check it out tonite.

I opened the laptop and it seems the cmos battery wasn't inserted all the way in and therefore not making contact. I think this should fix the problem.

There's a chance that it got dislodged in transit. The boxes get bounced around in transit much more than we would ever willingly mistreat the computers once we have them in our possession.
Anyway, I hope the problem is now fixed.
