Recently bought an Averatec 5100HX refurbished from Eagle Computers. It arrived defective - I can not connect to the net inspite of downloading drivers.
I have gotten conflicting opinions from Averatec customer service reps on whether it comes with a recovery CD. None was included in the package. They want to charge a minimum of $10.00 shipping charges to ship the recovery CD and I am not even sure if that would solve the problem. Also I the model came from Eagle with MS Works installed. If I use the CD will that all get wiped out?
I am debating whether it would just be better to ship it back to Eagle for a refund though that will mean I paid shipping and restock fees and never received a computer.
I am almost ready to go postal over this situation. I can't see how this can be legal. I pay almost $150 and get nothing.
Any advice would be appreciated. I would never adivse anybody to deal with Averatec or Eagle ever!

There's a reason why it's refurbished in the first place. You're just buying someone else's problem. I would never buy refurbished since the price difference between a new one is not significant. The warranty is less also. I would recommend to get a refund and chock up the re-stocking fee. How are you connecting to the Net? Modem, wireless, LAN? Look under hardware and see if there's a warning icon. It just might be you need a new driver. What I would do is to uninstall the offending hardware and reboot. Windows will recognize the hardware and hopefully install the driver correctly once rebooted. If it's a wireless problem make sure you turned on the wireless card.. usually a button and configure your access with the router. A recovery disc will delete all your present programs and install the original ones. If it had Works originally it will install that too. Make sure you back up all your files before doing so and can restore them afterwards. Good luck.
