Wha? "Legally install XP"? It's not legal to install XP on a system that shipped with vista?

It is legal if you have a legal copy of XP, but the trick is to be able to reinstall VISTA later and be able to Activate it again. Without using the path described in that link you will be out of luck when you try to re-Activate VISTA later.

You see, Billy Gates just doesn't have enough money yet so he wants to be sure the he gets every penny of MS Tax that he possibly can :D

If Microsoft extends downgrade rights to XP with the OEM versions of Vista Business and Ultimate it is legal to install XP on a machine that came with Vista. We use Microsoft down grade rights all the time, but we have access to the media through the business channel.

This is legal, but I don't know what activation aggravation Microsoft will give the home player to move from Vista to XP and back.

After a troublesome upgrade of windows vista I did a clean install and so far everything is working perfectly. I have no missing drivers, all my hardware works, everything runs great. Fast and very responsive compared to xp, windows pop up in a matter of seconds.

And I actually like vista. I mean, its not perfect and microsoft did have some stupid ideas, but overall it has worked great for me, and Im not saying that xp didnt, coz that worked fine too but vista has been just as good, if not even better with all the new stuff it comes with.

    1gb ram
    amd turion 64x2
    geforce go 6150

not the greatest of specs either but still a pretty modern laptop.

Still, pretty soon Im making a total switch to os x when my macbook arrives, I hate microsoft and the price tag of vista is laughable for what your getting really, shame I didnt pay it. :D Bill gates isnt getting my money.

My school is requiring us to get tablet PCs. They did this thing where they buy the latest software (Vista, Office 2007), but somehow, they can use the older versions(XP, Office 2003) with the same license. So, we're going to be using Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and Office 2003 until Vista is more mature, and then upgrade.

But, beside my school tablet, I like Vista. It simply fulfills my needs. I'm a DX10 programmer, I play Halo 2 Vista and Shadowrun, and it's actually faster than XP on my macine at least. If it doesn't fulfill your needs, don't use it. It's not bad becasue of it. It's yoru job as a consimer to buy what you want.

I still feel many people who are complaining about Vista have either 1) Never used Vista or 2) are using it on an older machine.

With newer hardware (I'm running it on a E6600, 2GB RAM) it is without a doubt faster than XP during desktop use. I haven't benchmarked the games I play, but I don't notice a difference between the two OSes in terms of performance. Hardware wise, I'd say driver support for newer hardware is probably better on Vista than XP (makes sense).

Sure, Vista may not be the best upgrade for a AthlonXP 2500+ with 1GB of RAM, but newer machines, anything with a dual core processor and 2GB of RAM will run it well.

Agreed, chuck. If you look around, you see tons of people who don't use it becasue their morally against it! I say, don't use it, and stop complaining.

I prefer both XP and Vista. Anyone thinking of combining both to form VistXP?

Say, like the open source community with Linux, modding it to their liking.

Can 64 bit use 32 bit apps and 64 bit apps?

64 bit Vista Premium is better if your software and hardware drivers are there (64 bit).
    but
64bit OS can run 32bit apps without any compromises in speed, running at native speed to be exact. It can also run 64bit apps natively. The OS will switch between 32bit and 64bit when needed.

I've never had a 64 bit comp. What's the main/biggest advantage/plus of 64 bit programs? And anyother considerable things. Are there any things that are only 64bit?

The advantage of a 64bit computer can only be seen with a 64bit OS, and the main advantage is that it can address more than 4GB of RAM. 32bit however are limited by its addres space, and therefore is limited to 3GB.

64bit programs can utilise the processor (bigger registers) and more memory, and are slightly faster than their 32bit counterpart. Currently there 64bit applications are very rare.

To have a 64bit OS working on your computer, you have to have the 64bit drivers for the hardware in your computer.

    The C2Ds are 64bit aren't they?

So as drivers get better, should I eventually install the 64bit of Vista?

Yes. Another factor to consider is for the applications. Once they hit 64bit level, we will have transitioned almost completely into 64bit environment, and 32bit would have become the 16bit of Windows.
