I obtained a used 2300 from a coworker, and it was full of spy/malware, so I reformatted and figured that I'd use my desktop for obtaining drivers and such from the avaratec website. I'm regretting it now.

I'm not sure if the drivers are bad, or if the computer isn't recognizing the hardware.

In device manager, the following are lit up with the big yellow question marks of doom:

    802.11 bg WLAN
    Mass Storage Controller
MOdem Device on High Definition Audio Bus
    Video Controller

When I attempt to install the video driver from the avaratec website(nvidia gefore go 6100 is what's in there), it tells me that there's no matching hardware.

When I do the install for the wireless, it loads a ralink wireless tray utility, but doesn't give me any actual wireless functionality.

I'm a somewhat average computer user, and I've installed and uninstalled many drivers over the years. I've never had issues like this. Anyone had issues like this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm reachable via PM, email, or instant messenger if that's more convenient for any of you. (pystdragon on AIM/yahoo, [email protected] on msn)

Hey man, I feel your pain. I did the exact same thing. I can tell you what I did so that you don't do it:

The video drivers from Averatec just don't work, I don't know why. I also tried obtaining them from nVidia directly and from the HP site (from a laptop with the same video card). But none of these worked because the computer just doesn't recognize that it has a video card at all.

I ended up installing Vista Ultimate instead, and the Vista video drivers from Averatec DO work. BUT, your processor will now only be running at 800 MHz because of BIOS issues with Vista. There is a fix that involves using BIOS from an Everexx machine (the instructions for that are in the large thread on this site about 800MHz issue)

After flashing with the Everexx BIOS my machine has become a brick even though the flash reported successful ( I explain what happened in the other thread in more detail.)

I guess my advice is to be careful, I don't want anyone else to go through the same frustration I did. AND complain to Averatec about having crappy support and drivers...if enough of us do it, maybe they will listen.

    Cheers

For this one, when you install the RaLink thing...make sure to select the "Microsoft Wireless Zero" option at the end. Then you can ignore the Ralink utilities and your wireless should work normally.

    in same boat,

    802.11 bg WLAN
    Mass Storage Controller
MOdem Device on High Definition Audio Bus
    Video Controller

all yellow, seems like averatec should ( must ) provide correct drivers for each model af computers
