So I am interested in the Sharp MW50DS, which is a Japanese model and a scaled-down version of the M4000. I am just curious if anyone has tried to open one of these up to upgrade the RAM or the Hard Drive? Is it difficult to open the case, or are there any problems that I should be aware of?

It's always easy to upgrade the hard drive, and usually the RAM as well. Regarding ram, it might be harder to do on some notebooks since the module might be in a hard to reach place.

So my girlfriend just bought the MW50DS from Yodobashi Camera in Fukuoka, Japan. Total cost? About $590 US, brand new! A steal of a deal, IMO. I am jealous, especially since she convinced me not to buy one of my own. This is such a beautiful machine, with a great screen, awesome battery life and incredibly light. My 12.1" iBook feels almost twice as heavy as this 3lb. 13.3" wonder. I believe we shopped at the optimal time because of the rollout of Windows Vista machines.
Anyhow, for anyone who might be wondering, it is very easy to upgrade the RAM and the hard drive on these units. It is simply a matter of unscrewing easy-access panels on the bottom of the unit. The RAM comes in standard 200-pin SODIMM style, the 256 onboard being spec'd at DDR2-400 PC3200. Max RAM on the MW50DS is 1280MB. -
BTW: to the Mods, if it's possible, please revise the title of this thread to read the M W70J and M W50DS. I made a mistake when I first created the topic.

Yes, it is easy - just unscrew the hatches on the bottom and replace your HD or add memory. However, there is only one slot for RAM, so you can get to 1.5GB easily on the MW70J. UNfortunately the other 512MB is soldered on the motherboard.
Easy to upgrade RAM and Hard Drive in M4000 / MV70J / MV50DS ?
