Hi, I'm new to the Zepto forums after having a shocking experience with my ordered M1330.

I was just pricing up a configuration for the 3414W and had a couple of questions...

    1) Does the webcam rotate 180 degrees? It looks like it does but I'd like to make sure.

    2) Upon selecting the SSD option, my delivery time goes to "over 12 days" or something similar. I need this notebook in time for Uni, so would it be possible to know a more exact time frame?

    Many thanks in advance! :)

I think any component with a red blob by it means that they don't know for sure when it is available because the suppliers are waiting for stock. I believe the yellow blob means it is in stock with the suppliers.

Anyway, some lateral thinking... Can you live with 32GB? What OS will you be using? Vista would want most of that for itself. The SSD will give some extension of battery time and you can probably get quite a bit of that extra time using a turbo memory module (see Anandtech). However, this isn't an option on the 3414W.

If you are upsizing from 13.3" you may also want to consider taking advantage of a higher resolution (WXGA+) display which is available in the 6x24W series (which, incidentally, is slightly lighter than the 3414W). You will then get more pixels to look at in return for having a bigger notebook (although you get no webcam - can't have everything!). The 6x24W batery life isn't wonderful, although they say a 12-cell battery will be available in September.

Thanks for the reply John... I was just thinking about the 32gb and although it'd be nice to see everything go so fast, I don't think I could manage with it! Thanks for the explanation of red blobs too. I just thought they meant a big price increase over standard spec!

A bigger res would be nice but since I'll be going to Uni I'd like a rotating webcam so I could record lectures if I wanted to.

As for turbo memory... I was looking at a rizeon S37S too and I know it's a little bit off topic but has anyone got any thoughts on that? Again, my only concern is the "mid-september" ship date...

    Thanks again

    Apologies for double post!
Just noticed the mouse-over text on the red dots... should have seen that before!

Can anyone explain the difference between "Samsung dvd rw dl" and "samsung dvd rw dl slot-in"?

The Rizeon S37 is an option in the 13.3" size as an alternative to the M1330. At one stage they thought they were going to ship in July but they just aren't getting the stock through from Asus (maybe competing with Dell for 13.3" panels). Check with Rizeon what the current forecast is for availability. The company has been around for a couple of years and seems to have found a niche in the market, while Asus quality is usually good. I had the S37E on my short-list but then decided to upsize to 14.1".

The difference between the two optical drives is that the cheaper one is a tray loader and the more expensive one is slot-in (like the M1330). However, I don't think the latter supports 8cm discs.

Thanks for all your help John.

For anyone else wondering about availability, apparently the S37S has a 17th Sept ship date (one day after my course starts :() and you should hold off on ordering the 200gb hard drive if you don't want to delay that date.

The Original supplier of the SSD drive is no longer stocking them now . We are seeking another supplier so currently there are no exact dates of when these will come in.
The webcam will not move 180 degrees it is stationary. If you select parts that are all in stock then you should have the notebook in around 1 week.

Personally, I ordered the Intel wireless card because I have found them to be very compatible in the past and, maybe, when the "n" standard is finally ratified it will use whatever Intel has chosen because of the weight of numbers.

The Zepto wireless card is slightly less expensive and, if you also get the recommended D-Link router, might give you a 300Mb/s connection.

54Mb/s is the maximum connection speed and, I believe, is shared between users. The speed may also drop depending on connection quality.

If we assume that you get 20Mb/s, say 2MB/s, this is equivalent to 120MB/min or 7200MB/hour. That is more than DVD quality, so it should be feasible (and most streamed video is compressed).

I've never tried it , but it should work if there's only one of you trying to do it and you have a good quality connection. If there are several people trying to stream video through the same 50Mb/s network then you are likely to have problems.

Perhaps someone has tried to do it and can share their experience.
