    Hi

a few weeks ago I sold my compal to a friend, but today he called and said the screen stopped working. This are the symtpons:

    - The screen stays black, the backlight does not activate at all
    - Windows boots up as normal (I can hear the startup sound)
    - The time from bootup to windows login takes longer as usual
    - External monitor doesn't work (either because of an improper configuration of the hotkey, or a broken vga-card)
    - My friend powered the laptop with an adapter which outputs less amperage than the default one (possible cause?)

Luckily, I can get spare parts from another friend whose laptop (which is the same as mine) has a broken Power-connector on the motherboard.

At this moment, I highly suspect a broken vga-card (8600mgt's have a fairly high failure rate I heard).

Before I continue to swap out the card with the spare one, I would like to get a second opinion, this is were I turn to you guys :)

Most likely the LCD power inverter went out.

So replacing the screen cover as a whole (least effort :) ) should be sufficient?

I just swapped the whole screen with my friend's: still nothing :(

Is it a power problem with the motherboard then, or can it still be the vga-card?

Ok, I replaced the vga-card and everything started working again! I may need to apply some new thermal paste to keep the cooling optimal.

things you described are the classic symptoms of 8600GT overheating and dieing. You have 2 options: bake the card or replace it ;) Baked card will work for ~2-3 months (based on my experience). My baked 8600 stopped working last week and I replaced it with R3650.
