Greetings all,
As of late, I've been having an alarming problem. Sometimes, when I start the computer up, the fan doesn't start (normally it revs when you hit the power button). Today I didn't notice this and saw CPU temperatures shooting into the mid-80s on a cooler. Anyone know why this problem is occurring? BIOS? Hardware problem? The thing that's changed is that I upgraded my hard drive and reinstalled Windows, but I'm not sure how that would prevent the fan for starting up at POST.
And for what it's worth, when the fan does start up, it runs about 7 degrees cooler than it used to with the old setup.![]()

I'd try the following order:
1)Clean the fan/s and vents from dust.
2)Check if you're running the latest BIOS version.
3) Reapply thermal paste.
4) Reset and re-flash the BIOS.
5) Replace the fan.
Hope this helps -
The fan was cleaned recently, but I am guessing it is the BIOS that's causing the problem. I do have an old version, a very old version. I just started encoding a video, and the fan didn't rev up and the CPU hit 85 degrees. 2-3 minutes later, nearly idle, it's down 20 degrees. Weird part is, the fan did rev up when I was gaming earlier today.

Yes, update the BIOS first (not from Windows. Use a bootable CD/DVD/USB)
These temps are a little high anyways.
You will need to re-apply the thermal paste.
Also, while replacing the paste clean the heatsink's radiator. There might be plenty of dust on it, preventing the fan from doing the job.
Another question, does the fan noise sound the same as normally? In the worst case you might still wanna replace it. -
Well, the CPU idles at 46-47 degrees, which is actually cooler than it used to be, so I highly doubt the hardware is malfunctioning. Load temperatures are about the same. However, it might be a good time to reapply thermal paste, so I might as well do it at some point. However, since my last post, I haven't been having any problems. I also realized one other thing, every time the fan didn't start up, it was after I got out of either sleep or hibernation. So, I don't know, I'll upgrade the BIOS since that's something I should have already done. Just for kicks, I might pop in my old hard drive (that still has everything on it) and see if I still have the same problem.
Oh, and fan noise is the same when it's running. No audible difference. -
occasionally when i'm playing bf2142 online the computer's fan will get really really LOUD. so i started thinking... why would the fan get that loud?
cho yung tea -
There may be two reasons for your problems: 1. The connecter between the Power and your fan comes loose; 2. You fan is broken. May be your fan need to clear.

By the way, my fan was starting to vibrate real loud a month ago, I even thought of replacing it.
But never the less I tried to take it apart; there are 4 small screws and foil that holds the turbine cover. After you take it off, you simple lift of the turbine, it's only holds on a magnetic field. So I carefully cleaned it and applied machine oil in the hole, not engine, but the oil for sliding mechanisms as this fan, which is more fluent.
After that the fan became as quite as new or even better and the temps dropped a bit. -
