    Hi,
I recently got a Compal HEL80 (cheapy), and I'm really satisfied with it. Only thing is that the fan keeps spinning regulary, even when I'm just surfing.

I'm using the latest bios (121b) and my temps is in the 40s at idle (the fan starts spinning at 46c)

I know changing the thermal paste to something not crappy will help, but I don't know how to get the cooler/heatpipe off. Any help?

Is it supposed to be like that, or is something wrong?

ps: There isn't a acpi module for it, is it?

If you're running Linux, most modules should load just fine (2.6.22 + patches here). You're best running NO_HZ aka tickless - it lowered the temps to about 19-20 degrees on mine (had it up at 40-44 before too). The only reason the fan kicks in now is the graphics card which goes up to about 55 in idle 2D work, at which point the fan kicks in ;]

Ofcourse, I have both my graphics and cpu proper-smeared with coollaboratory liquidmetal, which definetly is worth it imho.

As regards getting the cooler etc off, it's fairly simple, tho you just might get the real work done and put it on the graphics as well as you'll probably end up experiencing what I am now, that is, the fan kicking in because of the gpu ;-)

There's disassembly guides about, try searching the forums, it was brought up on numerous occasions, it's quite good (except for one screw being missed out on it, the one below the right hinge to be precise. I think tehre was some other thing but I can't recall now.).

    ok, thanks :)

yesterday I put some arctic silver ceramique on the cpu. But when the temps reach 46, the fan kicks in.

Yeah, and I don't use linux...

Also try undervolting(search the forums for guides/tips) the CPU with RM Clock or NHC. You could also underclock the GPU when you arent doing anything GPU intensive.

Here is the HEL80 disassembly guide if you want to try applying paste to the GPU(do it as a last resort).

Also make sure the vents/fans are clear of any dusts and you might want to take a look at the cooling guide.

Yeah, I've also undervolted (all multipliers at 0.95v and stable)

I have now underclocked the gpu even more than standard, hoping that is solves the problem. (it isn't a problem really, just a little annoying)

I tried to undervolt my notebook to 0.95V at all multipliers too, didn't go too well. System locked up almost immediately. I now have it at 1.1V @ max. multiplier and intermediate voltages at other multipliers with 0.95V at the lowest multiplier. Seems to work.

Processor is Core Duo T2400 1,83GHz btw.

I use NHC, just set it to a lower setting than default, check for stability (prime95) and go lower and lower until it hangs :p

The fan noise was always one of the common complaints about the HEL80. Some found that will newer BIOSes the fan activity was reduced. I personally just got used to it but never really was bothered by it in the first place. Usually there's enough noise around me to drown it out anyways.

if you sit down and give it some hearing, you can hear the fan when it's going at medium speed even with ambient noises. it just blends in, but it does not mean it's not audible ;) I would rather have indeed longer life-span for hardware, but on the other hand, some higher treshholds wouldn't hurt I guess. Like, 60 degrees for GPU perhaphs.

Yeah, its not that loud, its just a little annoying starting every 5min and only running for 20 seconds... I rather wish it always ran at low speed, than OFF or medium....
