    Hi.

On my HEL80, I just upgraded my bios from 105B to 110B, and everything went fine...But before, my fan went at full speed for two seconds and then went completely down after post. But now, it keeps at a medium speed all the time, which is quite annoying compared to the other...Before I flashed, the temperature on the CPU was about 50c, now it's about 40c, and I don't mind having the highest temp :)...
Is there any way to fix it except flashing back to the 105B?

(btw, I flashed using the Winplash utility to flash my bios, and after I read the Hel80 Bios update thread ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=77867), where Donald says "No, do not use the Winphlash utility on a Compal laptop."...Why?)

    Thanks for any replies,
    Kjetil.

Compal recommends using an external drive, not Winphlash.

    I recommend:

    1. Never update your BIOS unless you read what the new BIOS does. If it does not fix something you need fixing, or it changes something that you do not want to change...don't update your BIOS

    2. Always follow the manufacturer's BIOS flashing instructions

Flashing your BIOS can be a dangerous thing to do and doing it wrong can require sending it back to the manufacturer for an out of warranty repair.

And there is a possibility of corrupting the BIOS chip in which case you will need a new one.

On laptops, it is more risky because you don't have the option of resetting the CMOS by moving the jumper.

Yes, Im fully aware of that :)

I also read the release notes, and I didn't find any particular about fan adjustements....and what's the difference between flashing from external drive and winphlash? (apart from winphlash being more risky since it's in whinedos)

I found the bios stuff at bizcom's support site ( http://www.bizcom-us.com/support/TechSupportDriversDownloadPage.htm#EL80)

    Thanks for your replies.

I didn't ask why, I just follow Compal's recommendation. Their engineers are in Taiwan, so asking why is usually a fruitless excercise.

What issue did you have that 110B fixed? Or, did you update it just because it was there?

    Fruitless excercise :p...lol

Well, mostly faster boot time and some minor error fixes...I'll guess there's no problem downgrading the bios. The 105B bios is the same everywhere, global? So if I downgrade, I get the exact one that came with the comp? (Well, I do get a colder machine with the newest bios, but that's not a problem for me right now...so if I want more fan later on, I could just upgrade again later :) (for merom support as well))

I have been using 110B for almost a week now with no fan issues. The big plus with 110B is much, much faster boot time.

Hmm, weird. I have as well noticed much faster boot time (which is great), but the fan spins more often now then what they did before, and now they're going up and down like crazy, which they didn't do before...Earlier the fan was always running constantly on one speed or not running at all (oh, the silence..) :)

Where and how did you flash your bios?

I used a bootable DOS CD.

I almost never hear my fan turn on.

Well, that's odd...Mine's almost always spinning..Where did you download the bios? Thanks for your help.
