So I've been looking at this site:
https://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/category/laptop
I like the look of the fangbook edge as it is around £1k and has really good spec. Gtx 970m and a boosted intel i7 to 3.7ghz. This looks to be a brilliant machine.
I've been wondering has anyone has encountered problems with this laptop and what are their experiences.
I'm not sure if this is a clevo based laptop of not.
Thanks

So just ordered my fangbook
couldn't get better spec for the money! Am looking forward to it.

Hey there Jason! I joined the forum specifically because I want more information/reviews/impressions on this laptop. Which model did you get? The FHD (1080p) screen or the 4k screen? Did you get the 1TB 7200 HDD or did you swap that for an SSD? How much RAM do you have installed?
And how is the build quality on this machine? Does the body feel solid? Is there much flex in the screen? I know that these are essentially a clone of the MSI GS60.. have you tried one of those as well?
Any impressions of the keyboard or trackpad quality?
The things that are attracting me to possibly purchase the fangbook edge are the Intel i7-4870 CPU along with the Thunderbolt 2/mini display port. As far as I know, this is the only thin gaming laptop (GS60 clone) that has those features. I'd like the ability to use Thunderbolt peripherals in the future, so that's making me consider this machine.
I'd love to hear more about what you think about your new laptop! I'm surprised about the lack of reviews out there for it!
Thanks! -
Hi there, I had the same problem! Nobody seemed to take the plunge and give their impressions on it. I decided for that value that I would have to give it a go! And I am definitely pleased that I did because it's a brilliant machine. I got the 1080p screen which is beautiful as it is. I would have gone for the 4k but tbh I can't see myself needing it, it's all price and preference though. I can definitely see it being worth it if you go the top spec and get the gtx 980m too. The hard drive I got was the sea gate 1tb with 8gb SSD caching as it was a nice balance on price and performance. It's quick enough for me anyway. Boots up really quickly. The RAM is the standard 16gb which is brilliant, it's DDR3-1600 SODIMM Memory. I personally stuck with the 970m which was good enough for what I wanted and rubs any game I've thrown at it on ultra. Some games (assassins creed) has its own issues so using options like ambient occlusion isn't possible. I've been using msi afterburner to monitor temperatures, usage and FPS and can't fault it really. Never goes above 85 degrees on cpu and same for the gpu (probably no more than 80)
The machine is solid but light weight. There is flex is the screen as it is very thin but it's solid enough that you won't break it instantly! I haven't personally owned an msi but I've seen them in the flesh and it is essentially the same, there are a few minor differences like the badges and I believe some of the ports like the thunderbolt are different. I did a lot of research before buying so it's good you're looking for feedback!
Keyboard is great, lovely light up backing in red. The only issue that takes getting used to is the enter keys top half is basically the hash key which takes some getting used to but it's fine really.
Trackpad is an odd one, it's a good pad but the buttons are built into the pad like an ultra book, so you have to be careful when clicking and scrolling.
Personally I opted for windows 7 because I hated 8 on my laptop and thought it was designed poorly. Even 8.1 annoyed me too much. So I'd recommend 7 at purchase to save hassle.
Here's a picture of the ports:
Overall it's a great machine, definitely good quality, great performance and value for money.
The only negatives are literally the integrated trackpad buttons and the fan noise under HEAVY load but even then it's not any noisier than a console. I'd easily buy one of these again over any other laptop I've come across.
If you need any other information then don't hesitate to ask. It's a great machine and i am enjoying it greatly. I hope more people start coming forward and giving their experiences because this laptop deserves it. I recommend the next day delivery if you're in the UK as its virtually the same price and you get it much sooner. I paid £1250 and it was delivered in 2 days. really quick service.
Thanks

hmm is there any difference in getting the fangbook compared to the msi gs series?
-
Thanks for the reply Jason! I'm considering picking one up soon. One more question: does the logo on the back of the screen light up really brightly? Is it flush with the back cover or does it bump out slightly? I'm wondering because I would love to cover it with a sticker..
@Alexander: As far as I know, it's the same chassis as the MSI GS60, but it has slightly different components on the inside. You have the option of getting the Intel i7-4870 CPU (3.7 GHz) instead of the i7-4710 (3.5 GHz) that comes in the GS60. The Fangbook also has the Thunderbolt 2 port for it's mini-display port, unlike the GS60 which only has the mini-display.
However, the Fangbook edge doesn't have a Steel Series keyboard, so it's backlight will only ever be red. And there are a couple of other differences that I can't think of off the top of my head. But, personally, I'm mostly concerned with the build quality and the trackpad response. A lot of people have been complaining about the GS60's trackpad, so I'm wondering if the Fangbook's is any better or functions well enough.
Also, Jason, have you noticed any problems with the WiFi card? Any dropouts or lagging?
Thanks again! -
Also... upon looking closer at the pictures of the mini-display port on the Fangbook, I've noticed that it doesn't seem to have the Thunderbolt icon next to it... rather, it only has the MiniDisplay icon... can you confirm for sure that the Fangbook has a Thunderbolt 2 port on it?

It looks exactly like msi GS60, guess they both have the same shell

Cyberpower really has a great deal going on for the Fangbook Edge now any chance you can update us after owning it for a while.
Is the keyboard really only RED backlit, in a video on there site the had one BLUE colored and I would much prefer that. -
CyberPower's customer service really sucks
I've Emailed them at least a 5-6 times without a single response.
They do have some great deals going on at times but not responding to a single message after weeks of trying is really ridiculous .
I've bought my first "gaming" laptop from them years ago and it was a well built but I will never buy from them again after this last purchase. -
I almost settled on them, but called to ask a question about their military discount and it was a bad run around. I haven't seen great about them and compared to the XOTICPC thread I just skimmed through I don't see cyberpowerpc here (but that xoticpc thread had there customer service there which is cool). Would anyone recommend cyberpowerpc?
