Some of you should be seeing your shiny new MXW3V systems today. I'm sure we'd all be psyched to hear some first impressions... particularly concerning real-world in-lap heat tests.

A couple quick answers:
Right palm-rest heat is virtually eliminated
Bottom gets fairly warm...I can only imagine how much worse the W3V is
Baisically, in a laptop with this size and this power, heat is inevitable. While the MX does a good job in managing thermal buildup, it cannot realistically be expected to have no heat issues. -
Just got my MX - I can't compare it to other Avus models. I have it on my lap right now. It gets warm but less so than the HP I used to have. I'll give more impressions the more I use it. But my first impressions are that it's very sturdy. Quiet, and the nicest screen I've seen. I have the 7200rpm HD, with 1.86ghz PM.. overall it seems very fast. The battery life seems good at full power and even better at dim screen. I appreciate not having a bunch of bloatware on the laptop. Portable One have been great to deal with. A real person who cares on the second phone ring.
Big Props to Portable One.. I'm digging the machine, it was worth the wait. -
I received my MX on Tuesday and have been busy with it ever since - thus my silence here. I installed a wireless network at home the same day and have been configuring that and enabling file sharing. I have only started loading programs and haven't tested the computer using real applications yet - that will come this weekend. I am still learning VCOM and Power4 Gear. It took me a bit of time to wade through the admin. screen to check and un-check boxes.
I'll probably contact P1 with a few questions next week. My computer arrived with no CD for Windows XP Pro or any instructions or disks for the Logitech mouse - is this normal?
It is a simply beautiful machine, gorgeous screen, quiet as a mouse, no heat to speak of. The exhaust fan on the side does put out heat though! (but that is what it is supposed to do...). The Booq XM sleeve fits like a custom made glove. Any more gushing and I am going to short out the keyboard!! More later!! Doug -
Thanks for your comments on your new machines. Could you by any chance rate them on a 10 scale and also post temps from mobilemeter?
-
Do any of you guys use your laptops for extended use - talking anything from over an hour to multiple hours of use.
If so, how are your eyes reacting to the screen in terms of the glare?
Is it particularly straining, or is it fine.
Also, do you find the 14" widescreen adequate for all your needs size-wise?
I'm torn between the MX and the slightly larger (15"), non-glare ASUS V6V.
Thanks -
I haven't noticed anything with the screen glare affecting my eyes. You can turn down the brightness level which I do when on battery power to get more life out of it. The 14 is perfect for me.. anything bigger and it gets too cumbersome when you take it around. If I want a bigger screen I'll plug it into a seperate flat screen monitor.
I'd rate my MX a 10. I'll get back to you on the temp. I notice it stays a lot cooler when the fan is sufficiently able to get the air out, egl; when it's not on your lap and on a table. -
Thanks to all for the first impressions on the MX. I have one question, I noticed that on the PortableOne site the old port replicator for the MX doesn't work with the new MX. Has anyone heard of a good docking station or port replicator solution for this notebook? It would be a real pain to have to plug all the connectors in when I go to the office.
thanks

Is the 14 inch screen big enough to put two windows side by side? Also, what is the max amount of time you can use the laptop on your lap without it being painful?
-
a 14.1wxga really isnt large enough for 2windows side by side maybe 1 1\4 windows.

My impressions so far.
Wow, this thing is bigger than I expected. I came from a Toshiba Portege R100 though, which is about .8 of an inch thick and has a much smaller footprint. But the MX feels solid and I like the keys.
Love the screen. Need to find a good screensaver to show it off. Sent it back to P1 to fix a few stuck pixels, but otherwise it's very nice. Viewing angles are nice, not sure what the other W3V owners on the ASUS board are complaining about. 3 people could watch a movie or a presentation comfortably - any more than that and I'd want to move up to a bigger screen anyhow.
Love the brushed metal exterior. Palmrest doesn't get hot, but the vent blowing out hot air from the CPU sure does. I wonder if this is going to damage my desk in the long run and maybe I need to set the notebook on something.
It boots up fast, haven't timed it but definitely at least twice as fast as the R100. My R100 is 1ghz Pentium M and 1280 MB memory, W3V is 2ghz Pentium M and 2048 MB memory.
I booted it up for the first time and I was kinda surprised that they had installed Firefox and Thunderbird for me. On the one hand that's nice but since I have MS Office I'll just end up uninstalling those programs.
I might keep the R100 after all for more mobility because it's just that super portable, and for office applications it's fine. But to watch a movie or play games on the go, W3V is it.
First impressions?
