Many vendors still have them in stock (Amazon, AVA Direct). Newegg is blowing them out at the minute.

They had the single card, Blu-Ray model they listed Friday for $999.99 and while contemplating whether to snag one (A single 3870 isn't exactly sexy....) it sold out in 48hrs so there went that option.

    So I said, "bummer...."

I was contemplating picking up a NP5797 barebones to tide me over, then

They have a few Crossfire models with DVDRW for $1199. Cheaper than a N5797 barebones w/ GTX280M ($1429) and faster.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856172007

I couldn't help myself and snagged one since I have an OEM QX9300 (soon to most likely have a spare in a few days to go along with it if anyone is looking for a OEM QX9300), 4gb, a few 320GB WD's 7200rpms and 3x Intel 5350's sitting on the shelf and ordered one to tide me over till I sort out my current laptop dilemma and get a better picture of the M98 vs. W90Vp vs. NP5797 debacle or if it works out, keep it.

The NP5797 w/ GTX280M scores were about what I expected. I know the 3870 Xfire will do much better.

The W90Vp scores are nice and I was leaning towards it, but $3000+ w/ CPU upgrade was getting a smidge steep with the M98 on the horizon (albeit the GTX 280M scores are, again, not earth shattering...

But the litmus test is to play WoW at full tilt to see how it handles at 1900x1200, everything to max, AA/AF max and shadows off....WoW is my ultimate benchmark ;) ).

wow is the ultimate benchmark! To be more specific, Wintergrasp is....ugh

Well I just picked one too, and how much for that qx9300?

The prices vary for the QX9300's.

If you can get an OEM for under $700 or a Engineering Sample for under $500, you're getting a really good deal, IMHO.

The one extra I had (I had a total of 3 in the last 10 days. One went to a bud who wanted a Quad for his GT725 (albeit it doesn't OC worth a darn in it), another to a forums bud (Striker), and the last is in my Whitebook.

As for WoW, yeah, this thing does 1920x1200, everything to max (except shadows of course), max AA/AF and 60fps pretty much everywhere including Wintergrasp. I am loving it. I'm finally able to crank everything up like on my desktop and not have places in Northrend bring it to s slide show esque experience.

I'm sure this has been answered before but I can't find it. Is the case/plastics glossy or more of a matte finish like Thinkpad or Alienware?

Yeah, you can see in the pic. They are basically identical. I'm more interested in the BIOS/Driver support end of the equation. Any idea of a price point?

Thanks for the replies. I have both matte and glossy notebooks at home. I hate having to grab the micro-fiber cloth just to wipe away fingerprints. Is the whitebook close enough to the M17 that the plastics can be replaced? The whitebook is obviously much cheaper.

The design seems to go as far back as the M9700i. Not sure if this is worth pursuing but is that a correct statement?

    That is correct. M9700a = Arima W830Da, M9700i = M9750 = Arima W835Di, M17 = Arima W840Di

Is that how you changed your whitebook? Old Alienware parts then had it painted? I would assume new features like fingerprint reader would be lost.

no because the M9700a/i palmrests are not compatible, so I had to get the original palmrest painted. Basically the only things that are compatible amongst those models are the lids, hinges, lcd bezel, power button bezel, touchpad, HD caddies, camera and the optical drive bezel.

I can't justify a W90Vp AND Whitebook. I tried every excuse to hold onto it (I even offered it to my daughter, but she's content with her smaller/lighter MSI 1722), and at the end of the day, it had no use in the Electrosoft household, thus it sadly had to go bye bye. :(

I'll sell you the one from my M17 if it'll work (it should as they're the same laptop). Doublecheck and find out.

If it works, I'll sell it to ya for $25 shipped assuming you live in the U.S.

I may forget to check back in this post, so email me if you can't PM me. [email protected]
