Just received my MX from P1 one hour ago and so far the only thing that I can say is WOW! So far so good.

I have the MX and the Fujitsu N6010 side by side and my first impression is that the screens are equal. More to come.

Glad to see that you like it! Which screen did you land up getting?
We were very impressed with the UX too- I think their machines are winners.

I got the stock screen. I couldn't justify an extra $300 for something that I would not have used outdoors.

The wireless card has picked up several wireless networks in my neighborhood that I didn't know about. So much for the Atheros card in my Fujitsu n6010. I guess it's time for me to lock my router down.

So far this is a hell of a machine, but time will tell.

I guess compared to the N6010 it's going to be much more mobile, but is it that much of a device you would want to be moving around constantly.
Personally I still like the older MX better, the limited screen resolution on the new ones is a bit of an annoyance.

I'm a teacher and I use a laptop in most of my lectures i.e. PowerPoint, DVD's etc. I have been lugging the N6010 around for almost one year now and although it's a great laptop it does get to be a pain. I also spend time working as a consultant and I needed something a little bit more unobtrusive when dealing with clients. The MX is an ideal size for me and the resolution is just right for my old eyes.

    Dear Teacher
I am thinking of getting the portable one UX 33 with the transflective screen to replace my aging NEC daylite [also trasflective].
Is the UX a noisy machine? Can you hear the fan or the hard drive much? I'd be pleased to know...
I don't know if i can buy it in the uk. Is partable one part of fujitsu?
Does the screen look ok indoors? [and out]--and non-viewable conditions?
    Thanks
    Murray

portable one is not really a manufacturer. they are just a store in california (major sales in USA, and very limited in canada) that sells fujitsu laptops (authorized retailer) and they sell configured barebones. these barebones which the brand under their name are actually asus models. the mx is an asus w2v (i might be wrong on the model number of this one). and the ux is an asus z33a. so check out the reviews for the z33a, and in the UK look for asus retailers.

from what i know about the ux and the z33a, they are quite silent, no ratling fans, and the HDDs on all of todays laptops are pretty silent. I do understand your concern, I have an old laptop and the HDD on that one is like a grinder. So you should have no concern when it comes to HDD noise. one more pro for the ux/z33a, they don't heat up that much especially around the keyboard area.

The MX is actually a modified W3V and, as stated, the UX a modified Z33a. Portableone is a great US company with fantastic customer service; it is not a global company. You'd have to e-mail them about shipping overseas, but the warranty issues may be inconvenient from the UK even if they did ship it overseas. If you are still interested, that is something you'd have to discuss with them.

I wrote an extensive "first impressions" of the UX a few weeks ago here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=28839 which may be helpful. I think it is an amazing machine for its size/weight. However, Portableone has made many modifications to the Z33a so I am not sure how applicable my review of the UX is to the unaltered unit. The fan does not rattle, but it is a low hum and audible when the unit is on AC (performance stepped up). Heat does blow out the right side when the unit is on AC power and that area does get warm (in front of the fan). The underside on AC gets fairly warm but not hot; I don't know if the Arctic silver on the UX helps with the cooling compared to the Z33a. On battery, the fan doesn't run continuously, and it is much cooler. The keyboard and wrist area barely get warm (if at all), both on AC and battery.

The hard drive noise is minimal. I know the UX only has Hitachi drives; I have seen other drives offered on the Z33a's, however.

The transreflective screen is an option unique to the UX, and if you look at my link, I have discussed it extensively. One word- AMAZING! I am a very visual person, and researched this purchase extensively, and I can honestly say that, IMHO, it is the BEST screen I have seen on any unit, including the Fujitsu CV screen.
