Got my new laptop this morning and installed XP.

Should I go Vista? I have a copy but held off because I've heard its a system hog.

    I have a 1.66 cpu,2gb ram and 160hd installed in my 6625WD.

Do you need vista for DX10 games ?

I also find the touchpad strange, I've had to install the drivers from the supplied DVD and turned the settings to fast, but its still a drag to move the cursor around the screen. Can this be changed ?

Is there a middle mouse button as well?

    Thanks

You do need vista for dx10 games, but with 2gb ram and a 1,66ghz cpu, you wont be running any dx10 games at a playable rate anyway.

I would absolutely stay with xp for most performance.

    Really ?

Is DX 10 that bad on system resource?

I tested this laptop out with Unreal tour 3 tonight and its playing fine. Is it vista or DX10 which is going to kill my resource.

Surely this laptop and handle a medium setting on DX 10 games.

Is there a game out on DX10 to test ?

    Also another quick question.

Looking at the Zepto web site they list the 6625WD as a graphics laptop and not a gaming laptop.

But the video card is still a 8600mGT so surely it should be listed as a gaming laptop ?

unfortunately yes.. the theory is that since dx10 should be run through the hardware, it should perform just as dx9 but better looking when you use a dx10 gfxcard. But this isnt the case, atleast not now... you will see massive performance drops when using dx10 in games. Since the 8800 desktop gfxcards mostly have a hard time making dx10 enabled games run good enough for it to be worth it, I wouldnt expect any laptops to perform any better.

and yes, there are no dx10 support for winXP, Vista only. Some rumors says that the servicepack3 for XP will add dx10 support, but it wont be released until.. (insert unknown date), hence vista sp1 is comming first, and I personally would like to see this, before beliving it. :)

so would I see any difference in graphics if I installed vista on a DX10 game like world in conflict?

Running that game on XP I will only see DX9 graphics, but with vista I would see DX10 effects ?

    But at a FPS drop???

    So keep with XP??

The review I read comparing Lost Planet dx9 vs dx10 only had the fps go down from 34 to 30 in average. [ http://www.gamespot.com/features/6171326/index.html] Notice though that this isn't fantastic for a 3-person-shooter. I play LP and it's just a matter of tweaking the settings to something that works for you (don't count on native res.). It'll be playable, but nowhere near maxed out.

Besides LP, there is Bioshock (cool, but quickly done), Company of Heroes (cool, just cool), the forthcomming Halo 3 for vista, and other goodies, dx10 only.

In bioshock you have a specific option of turning dx10 effects on/off, so yes you'll see a difference, the question is, will you notice it? (I didn't).
I don't think the 1.66cpu will be that big a bottle neck running games, but that's only because the 8800 card is that much stronger than the 8600. Again notice that drivers are very important, the original released drivers (10x.xx something) wouldn't run LP dx10, the new one (15x.xx something) does it quite well.

From Xp to vista everyone agree a framedrop will happen. But I like vista, it's stable, your laptop can run it fluently, and you get some extra goodies (sidebar, dx10, new windows explorer). So does your day-to-day work compare up to running games?

About the touchpad, I eventually (after some wierd problems) installed a driver from symatec, haven't had a problem since (but then again, 95% of the time the laptop works as a desktop). I miss the middle mouse button as well (if someone can tell me how to map all three functions, you'll make my day)

Sorry but you obviously dont know what your talking about. OP dont listen to him.

Gaming on vista will be just fine, but will be a bit worse then XP (this is true for all games be it dx 9 or dx 10, its just how vista is at the moment, it has been fixed quite a lot but still not 100 %).

Difference between DX 9 and DX 10 effects is minimal, you wont notice a difference in World In Conflict if you run it in DX 9 or DX 10 (at least I didn't).

This dude is giving Lost Planet as an example.....a very horrible, unoptimized, rubbish port to PC which brings even the most powerful desktops to their knees and so should be avoided to use as a comparison.

It is true however that gaming performance (fps) will be better in XP then Vista for the moment but not soo much that games will be unplayable on Vista.

Its your choice as to what OS you want, with your setup you wont notice substantial differences between the two. If a game is unplayable on Vista doesnt mean it will run smoothly on XP.

As for the touchpad you can change how fast it is in the control panel and/or in the supplied software (synaptics)

Thanks for all the help. I installed vista today and all seems great, no real difference and speed problems playing my games.

One quick question on drivers. What driver should I be using for the video card? The one suppied with the laptop ?

Where do you get the lastest or best driver for the 6625wd ? NVIDA WEB SITE?

Trying not to flame for you refering me as 'dude', your example of World in Conflict is a mild understatement of

Gave LP as an exampel because it was the first Dx9/10 comparison and the conclusion carries on to the rest so far. Clearly my bad.

Anywho, forgot to say congrats on your new 6625w :)

Everyone, thanks for all the help and input.

I have vista runing and liking it alot on this machine.

One quick question about the 6625wd, on the web site its now as a graphics laptop. Is this machine a gamers laptop or graphics machine.

I went with this machine because it had the 15" screen and high res screen powered by the 8600mgt. Have I brought the wrong machine for games ?

P.S world in conflict looks lovely, will by that tomorrow and test

The biggest feature of the 6625WD is probably...the screen. As it's big and high resolution. It's just as capable as the 6224 for gaming, but you'll have to turn down the resolution settings for most brand spanking new games (which isn't too bad if the graphics are good :p).
