Topdog of the summer. The VBI program notebooks are storming our market, on which performance and parts are more important than the outside looks. That has to be paired with reasonable pricing of course. The FL90 - a produce of Compal seems to be the most popular among those... and for good reason it seems. It may not be as elegant as "brand notebooks", but it features, among others, the GF 8600 GT graphics card.

Casing

As we mentioned before, the Compal FL90 is the most popular notebook currently offered as part of VBI program. Long story short, the reson for launching this program was to challange "brand" laptops by offering on the market models produced by original manufacturers (the fact that most of the laptops are manufactured in chinese factories of few producers from Taiwan is still not a common knowledge). Those products are offered as part of this program, have to follow a set of guidelines set by Intel who also gives warranty for all of them.

It is often said, that the difference between barebones and brand laptops boils down to lack of a brand logo. It's a exaggeration of course, but there seems to be some truth to that. The barebones lack finesee of the top brands, but when compared to those "not-so-top", barebones may acctualy look better.

This seems to be the case with Compal FL90 as it looks quite nice. It's obviously not a piece of hardware that you would like to gaze upon for hours, but it's not ugly by any means either. There will be some people claiming that it's nothing special, averange. We however, see it as a solid looking notebook without (almost) any funky, unnecessary features. It can be easly compared to a busy ant - it ain't beautiful but it gets the job done. Besides - this notebook isn't as rugged looking as some other barebones - it's visuals are enchanced by additional buttons (those two buttons on the left side aren't the best looking ones though), and the power button is even equiped with blue LED.

FL90 is mostly dark purple - almous black. The color description is difficult due to a fact that the keyboard side is made of matte plastic and the screen casing top is covered by metalic paint. In fact, this dark purple color can be seen only when compared to black (more or less) screen lining, keyboard and the underside of notebook.

The middle of the casing top has a round shaped dent in it that is called "belly button". It's purpose is to fit logo of a brand under which it will be sold. The casing also has dent for putting lapsticker on - for all of those who consider the Compal to be dull looking.

The rough surface of the keyboard side is not nice to touch as is not a sign of upper shelve product. It can be satisfactory to those who can't stand this side usual silver covering though.

The case is very solid and sound, and it's practically totaly robust. Only the screen casing can be little deformed under pressure. This perfect image is clouded by the fact that the casing vibrates quite loudly when you
tap it. This can be a little disturbing only when you use the touchpad though.

The broad hinges are working well and the screen doesn't shake afer you change it's position.The biggest downside of the Compal FL90 design is the lack of latch to keep the screen casing locked. There is no magnets keeping the notebook closed - it is all in the hands of hinges. When notebook is held upside down by the lower part, the screen casing will open for about 1,5 cm due to the gravity. The hinges are constructed in a way that prevents opening the screen casing with one hand.

The FL90 constructors should be praised for very user friendly placement of all ports and heat exhaust.

INPUT DEVICES:
The Compal's keyboard is very comfortable to write on. If it's properly installed it cannot deform in any place. It's set quite nice with few exceptions: Fn and Ctrl keys are mixed in the lower left corner. The cursor keys - although squeezed between other keys - are suprisingly large and easy to use. The keys sizes are generally very good except for the small enter.

Writting on this keyboard is very quiet - the only "loud" keys are Caps Lock, left Shift, Enter and Space.

The touchpad dimensions are 6,8 x 3,6 cm. This means that it isn't big (especially vertical wise) and has quite unusal shape. It is very good touchpad non the less - it's precise, sensitive and with nice slide. The only con of it is vibration when double tapped.

Touchpad buttons are hard to press on the edges. We consider them quite loud - especialy with vibrating sound that is created when pressing them. They are quick and precise though.

In addition to silver multimedia-shortcut buttons at the top of the keyboard, the Compal also has two more situated on it's left side. They are white, not too appealing and hard to press. Their purpose has been a mistery for a while. Now we know that one of them (Q-Charging) serves to charge the battery to full, if an option to charge it to 50/75% has been chosen. The other (Power USB) allows the usb ports to be providing electricity even with the notebook off.

Display

The Compal that we recieved came with glass 15,4" wxga screen (1280 x 800). It has been manufactured by LP.Philips (the same screen is fitted in some HP Pavilions for example). The maximum screen brightness that we noted was 217,2 cd/m², which appears to be very good result, especially considering other produces of this company. The screen lightning is rather poor with a score of 74,3%. The maximum contrast seems quite ok though with a score of 241:1. The image quality is satisfying overall.

The picture quality is worse if we tilt the screen or head, disturbing the perfect angle between those. To sum things up: viewing angles are narrow. The black becomes gray quite quicly both vertically and horizontally. This is typical with LG.Philips screens.

Performance

Our Compal FL90 has been fitted with Core 2 Duo T7300 (2,0 GHz) processor. This seems to be optimal choice at the moment (performance wise) especially when considering performance / price ratio.

The graphics card is the GF 8600M GT. It is considerably more powerful than the 8600M GS that is fitted in the competitor - ASmobile S96S barebone. This seems to be the reason for the low popularity of the latter. Is it justified? The GF 8600M GT with 256 MB DDR2 memory on board (400 Mhz) cannot compete with the GF Go 7900 GS. It's performance can be compared
rather to MR X1900 (which, by the way, has been considered a quite powerful card until recently). In our opinion the GF 8600M GT will be a mainstream standard for long period of time and the appearance of more powerful NVIDIA cards will not change it as they will be fitted in bigger and more expensive notebooks.

Emissions

Loudness
When turned on, but left idling the fan turns on every half a minute. It takes a movement of cursor to launch more frequent cooling.
Under load the fan operates continually with occasionaly going into higher speeds. If we torture test the notebook it's cooling will start to operate at highest speed in about five minutes (emitting a noise at 41,2 dB)

As you can see Compal FL90 isn't a loud piece of hardware. The only problem might be dynamic changes of fan speed operation. This is easy to get by though.

The part that is really loud though is the TSSTcorp (Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology) optical drive. It produces so much noise (up to 46 dB during disc playback), that it practically unables one to watch a DVD movie comfortably.

Temperature
The heat emmited by the notebook under load is quite high. This is no wonder though, considering that it contains a GPU with performance that was impossible to achieve up till recently in a 15,4" notebook. The top layer of the keyboard side can sometimes reach a temperature of 42°C - at the left side directly under the screen (behind which you can find heat exhaust). The other warm points of the keyboard side are the left wrist support (37°C) and the touchpad (38°C). The bottom of the notebook heats up a little bit more as the maximum temperature of casing can reach 43°C there

Speakers

The sound quality is very good. We have to admit, that we were pleasantly surpirised with this aspect as it performed very good, especially in the highest volume setting.

Battery Life

We had an opportunity to test two batteries supported by FL90

The first one was a six-cell, 4800 mAh battery that comes as standard equipment. It allows for at least and hour, and 3 hours tops of battery life. It can be assumed that with averange settings and WiFi enabled the notebook will operate for around two hours.

The optional battery (nine-cell, 7200 mAh) is the one that, when fitted, sticks out of the casing (around 2 cm). This shouldn't cause any problems, but can be a bother to some people. The "mileage" achieved with this battery were between 1,5 and 4 hours. This means that this battery should allow for more than 3 hours of work.

As you can see, no matter which battery installed, the battery life isn't great. FL90's competitor - Acer Aspire 5920G is way better in this aspect.

Verdict:
Modest look, great performance. That few words accurately summarize Compal FL90. The main advantage of this notebook, which caused it's great popularity, is it's powerful GF 8600M GT graphics card. This has been obvious from the start - benchmarks and system specifications are clear. When we took a closer look at Compal, it became clear that it performs well in other aspects as well.

The most important thing is not to be afraid of it's poor workmanship. FL90 quality places it amongst the leaders of the market, leaving many recognized brands behind. There is a bunch of aspects which make him stand out from the crowd of averange notebooks. It has pretty decent keyboard. Display, although produced by LG.Philips and with narrow viewing angles produces bright picture, which should satisfy all but the most demanding of customers. FL90 should also be praised for it's excellent webcam, good speakers and low
noise emitted.

If not for the lack of latch Compal FL90 would be a superb notebook. And, when compared to price - probably an ideal notebook.

Btw, one model of the IFL-90 (in the netherlands, anyway) features a WXGA (1280-800) resolution and a 8600M 256mb. while our WSXGA (1440-900) features a 512 edition.

Uhh, I can already see the amount of typos and phrases that can be considered "engrish" . I guess that work can do that to a man.

BTW - FL90 is REALLY popular in Poland. Few weeks after it's introduction it's price went a little bit lower and then people literally bought every single one.

Now FL90 price has gone up by almost 100$ and you have to wait for more than a week for it (it used to be only one day wait). There are even some rumors about polish retailers shipping them directly from other retailers from neighbouring countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia) as our wholesale distributors are already out of stock and awaiting new shipments.

On polish forum about notebooks - notebookcheck.pl the thread concerning FL90 is the most popular of all with more than 50 pages of (mostly) meaningful opinions given by it's users. It has, among others, results of FL90 overclocking. I must say that they're pretty impressive - some users managed to overclock it very high: core 475@702; mem 400@525 - that yields 3d Mark 2003 score of 12500 points and 3d Mark 2005 score of 7500 points !!

oh and yeah, also, I think I'll be dropping the EL80 sometime soon once I'm back home and getting a FL90. Dunno what specs tho. But the HD-readiness of GF8600 vs 7600 is quite interesting

I'd just like to see the FL90 v2 coming with the fingerprint reader. It's not like I use it on my EL80 but hey, if it came with robson ? (and the eventual tvtuner possibility therefore?) Something to investigate
