This is the cheapest 4650 I've ever seen.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 MXM II VGA 1GB Not HD 3650 - eBay (item 270592942511 end time Jul-12-10 15:55:09 PDT)

If you are using a FL90 with a 256mb 8600m, be warned. I tried a 4650 1gb in mine and the pci-e would drop to x1 all the time. This resulted in abysmal performance. I tried absolutely everything there is to be done, reseat card, different OS, multitude of drivers, turning off ati powerplay, different vbios & motherboard bios, clear CMOS, registry changes, etc... . Popped a 3650 ddr3 in there and stays at x16.

how did you manage to get one with DDR3. all the places i have inquired about the DDR3 version they want close to $300 for one, that and they are much harder to get or find.

Yesterday, my fl90 (zepto) ate my 8600gt card. So I am now interested in upgrading to an 4650 512 ddr3.
As my gpu "was" an 512 ddr2, I would take my guess that the motherboard bios wont throttle the gpu as the memory in itself is the same size. As I have heard that if it passes the "limit" it will go from 16x to 1x...

    I have these links:
    http://atecheu.trustpass.alibaba.com...

    And some information:
    COMPAL IFL90 Upgrade page

What do you think? I'll buy one if you think it is possible.

    Hello everyone,

Recently my Compal's screen sopped showing anything... Black screen, no backlight, etc. I assumed it was the 8600GT so I bought a 4650 1gb ddr2 but when I swapped them the problem persists! Did the monitor broke or I ended up with two faulty GPU's?

I can't help much but most of the faulty 8600 GPU,s showed signs of color or light. A black screen is never good. Of course I assume you have good knowledge about computers.

    One sidetracked note is:
The only thing I can come up with are that you could try to run one ram at the time, to check if it blocks the boot process. Kinda common mistake on newly built computers. But I guess you already have.

So I would say that it is more motherboard sided than a GPU sided problem. Where did you find your 4650?

I have some repaired 8600M GTs here - I could seel you one at a affordable price, so you could check if it works with that ...

Post here if you are interested - I am living in Europe though ... if you are on the other side of the big pond, it might not make sense for you.

    Cheers

My 8600M GT fu**ed me up too... black screen ect. I brought it back to life with some baking in the prehistorical oven that I got. No money for new laptop, so I plan to stick with the "old lady" for some time, won't even play games, don't want to put it under pressure.

    Hi Layne,

tough luck. Would be cool if you report back here, once it goes dead again - I am interested for how long it works again ... I think it can be all from 1 day to 1 week or even month long ...

    Cheers

No problem, I'll tell you guys when it goes dead again, I hope it won't be in near future, but we'll see. The laptop's been working for about 20 hours now without problems. Max temps - not beyound 60 C.

I've bought it from a german store... I think it's the motherboard after all... I've used a multimeter to check the voltages and nor the power cable or the data shows anything and sometimes it doesn't even boot... I'm sending the computer to the guys who sold me the computer just to be sure...

I have 3 Compal FL90s. One showed the screen split in 6 frames, the other two were totally black.

zubirus, I am putting two 8600M GTs on german ebay today - they are repaired, currently working. Perhaps you want try one of them.

I have another one sitting here too, if you make a reasonable offer, I can send it to you, from Germany.

    Good luck!

Thank you for your offer, but I've already spent 200€ in a gpu, if it doesn't work I'll buy a new computer... My 4650' vbios is from Acer, do you think that might be the problem?

EDIT: My bios version is 1.13 I believe

Where did you buy it from?

Acer BIOS should be fine, I think.

I just got a ATI 3470, and it works (kinda ... only in safe mode, I get black display once windows loads normally, gotta test it more).
But it's a cheap replacement! Sure nothing close to an upgrade but 75€ with 3 month warranty from a german store is good enough if you don't plan to do gaming.

You can try updating BIOS, but without any display ... dangerous.

    Good luck!

Do you still have the 4650?

Can't you just return it to ipc?

Have you ever tried bakeing your 8600M GT?

I still have one dead 8600M GT at home. I need to "repair"/bake it. I could send it to you, and you promise to send it back. I figure you live in Germnay, so do I, so with Hermes we could do this exchange for a total of 8,60€.

For this to happen, I need to revive that 8600M GT first. Tell me if you are interested.

Other than that, I would first try to return it to ipc and ditch the laptop at ebay.

Did you already flash the system or video bios? I wouldn't do it if you havent yet!

Ehhhm, and from where did you get laptop?

    Cheers & good luck

I can't revive my last 8600M GT - reflowing did not work, it's officially dead.

Maybe I get one back from those I have sold, so in case you are interested in exchanging one, post here, maybe I can help.

    Cheers
