I've received and installed the hd3650 I ordered from ebay this afternoon. Results:
_The laptop goes through post and the bios reports 256mb of video memory. So far so good.
_Windows boot, drivers installed. Doing basic tasks is fairly uneventful.
_GPU idling at 60.
_Gaming: No go for now. I didn't reapply any thermal paste when I swapped the card so the temps basically spike to 90 and I get artifacts and back to the desktop with "driver crashed but successfully recovered message.... I need to scrap the thermal paste of the heatsink and apply some AS5. I also need to slightly move the memory chips thermal pads as they are not fully covered.
Off-topic: I need a new 9 cell battery for the lappy. During last week it was only lasting 1hr per full charge and it coincidentally choose today to completely die on me... Does anyone know where I could buy one? Thanks

You have IFL91, the one with integrated X3100? So it has a MXM slot? What about heatpipes?
Photos please -
I have a IFL91 with a 8600m GT mounted on a MXM-II port. The heatsinks fits the card perfectly, so I don't have any temperature problem, and it's idling at 50*C, but I have to send it back and get a replacemen as the one I received is defective: it doesn't handle the clocks of the performance 3d mode, I either get artifacts+driver crash notices or BSODs if I try to run anything remotely graphic intensive like say, a game....
I'll post pictures of the 2 cards and what it looks like when installed on the motherboard when I have time.
If all goes well in the end, my next upgrades will be TV Tuner, 500GB hard drive and t9300Attached Files:

how much better is it than the 8600gt?? and where did you get it from?
-
.. it's quite a bit better than the 8600m gt.
the 120 pipelines is twice what the 86 has, it's clocked a lot higher and uses a 55nm core.. so less heat and power.
it can be found here http://cgi.ebay.com/ATI-AMD-HD-3650...-VGA-Card_W0QQitemZ150289060831QQcmdZViewItem
i've been thinking about this for a long time.. but was not sure it would work. keep us updated on your results -
Wow...looks like MXM works on the IFL90/IFL91. Nice!
I was hoping at some point I'd be able to grab a 9600m GT and pop it in. The 3650 is a better card than the 8600, but the difference isn't that substantial. Noticeable, yes, but nothing huge. Overall though, it's a fairly decent upgrade. I'm just really happy to see that the MXM upgrade works, though.
I can't wait until you get the new card. Keep us updated!
Oh, and depending on where you bought the barebone, can't you ask your vendor for a spare battery? If not, I've seen one site selling spare batteries, I'll post it if I find it. -
wow nice find i may try one o extend the life of this a while
btw did you replace the screen you broke yet? and who did you buy from? did you get matte or glossy? thanks -
.
Got it from this seller.
I've also confirmed that I'll have to get the hd3650 exchanged as whatever I try I get artifacts... Even in the blue screens....
-
sharp vs lg thoughts?? and why did you go matte? im debating the same for my 1730 right now glossy vs matte and both are sharp that are available to me. the dell supplied lg is garbage imo..
-
So far I prefer the sharp. It is sharper(pun non intended), the matte treatment on the LG made it grainy whereas the sharp is crystal clear. , I didn't notice it that much when I had it but since I got the Sharp, the difference is clearly visible... -

Great news Ayle
Didn't realize that mxm upgrade is possible on ifl90 (I believe yours is ifl90 Everest reports your motherboard name as IFL 90 in screen shot).
Keep us updated with your new HD3650
If all is working well I could see more use for my ilf90 with new video card upgrade. -
-
IFL90 has touch sensitive panel and 8600M GT, FL90 has normal buttons and 8600M GT. IFL91 has X3100 and no possibility for an MXM upgrade

i found the cause of my artifacts. The heatsink is not flush with some of the memory chips because one of ic is slightly off leading to overheating... I'll dremel the heatsink a bit.

keep us informed, defiantly interesting.
-
Could you also take some snap shot on the memory chips where it is causing overheating? I'm interested in how HD 3650 differs from geforce 8600m in how heat pipe fit on it.
Have you recieved word from supplier on exchaning video card for you? -
-
Thanks, you rock dude
Can't wait to hear good news from you. -
Ok here are the pictures. The part that is causing problem is the big gray component,I don't know what it is, looks like some sort of oversized condensator, both cards have it but it is slightly bigger on the hd3650 meaning that it doesn't fit on the indentation in the heatsink. I had to shave(with a flat head screwdriver and a cutter) some aluminium off it, more or less 1mm on each side. You can see the scrapping marks on the second picture. I'll clean what I done once I've received my dremel from Amazon.
Currently the 8600 is back in the laptop, and I haven't seen any increase in temps, the heatsink still works perfectly.
Now I'll just wait for my replacement.Attached Files:

so how much was yours??
-
How much was what?
-
the card did you get it from the listed ebay seller or where did it come from?? i may try this..
-
Oh ok. I indeed got the card from that seller for $179.99. Came in a week. I think he is the only one selling hd3650 on there anyway.
-
So does that mean that this will be possible on my ifl90, 8600gt with touch sensitive buttons? is this the only card worth doing it with atm?
Cheers -
If your 8600M GT isn't damaged this change would be pointless. HD 3650 is only slightly better than 8600M GT (in 3DMark06 it's even worse). Maybe you will be able to change it for 9600M GT.
-
I just wasnt aware that I could change the graphics card in the IFL90. I wont be changing it anytime soon but I definitely will in future if its possible.
-
I didn't send the card back yet but I did another test: basically I use amd gpu tool to manually set the speed to 600/700 and low and behold the card didn't crash... I think I'll just ask the seller to send me a vbios dump so that I can have the correct 3d mode clocks.
My index scores went from
4.5 for aero to 5.9
5.1 for gaming to 5.4
My lowest score is now 4.8 for my ram XD -
That's nice dude
What was the 3D Clock speed before you made clock adjustment via amd gpu tool?
Anymore ingame crash happen afterward?
Care to take some ingame screen shot or benchmark? -
Before I made the adjustment the clocks for the 3d mode were 680/750 and the card can't handle them. That's why it kept crashing. A kind sould gave me his bios dump, now the problem is gone, I don't need to use amd gpu clock tool anymore. The card idle a in the low 40*C compared to the 60*C of the 8600. I'll post my benchmarks later today.
-
Low 40's? Nice. I think the lowest I've ever seen my 8600m go is like 49*C.
Glad to see it's working out. I wonder, though, if 680/750 made it unstable, then what's the best overclock the card can handle?
Anyway, can't wait to see the benchmarks! -
The max HaloGod2007 got was 660/900. Seems like the core don't really like more than that.
-
Bench Results!
3DMark05:
- 8600m GT@600/400:6319
- Mobility HD3650@Stock:8587
3DMark06:
- 8600m GT@600/400:3500 more or less I don't remember the exact score
- Mobility HD3650@Stock:3857
3DMark Vantage(just for fun):
- Mobility HD3650(didn't test the 8600): the card got raped sans lube ^^. Score is P851
Games are performing faster. But I need to scrap the oem thermal paste of the gpu heatsink and put some artic silver in there. -
Nice benchies. Oddly though, my slightly OCed 8600m GT with a bloated XP installation does better on 3DMark06. Guess the 3650 doesn't perform as well on 3DMark.
If you don't mind, could you comment on some specific real world performance? (any games you may have).
+Rep -
You can find now on ebay 9500M GTs that have GDDR3. Those should work in IFL90 and perform better than HD 3650.
9500M GT GDDR3 ~ 8600M GT GDDR3 -
yeah but 300$ for the 9500m lol
-
-
Hi guys, I have OC'ed the card to 700/900mhz and well it passed the first 2 tests, but crashed after while. I'm gonna get rid of the residue of thermal coumpound that are on the heatsink at the moment and see what happens after applying some arctic silver 5. The momry crashed at 900mhz but is stable at 800.
-
-
The memory emplacement are the same but the big grey chip(?) on the upper right part might create problems... It seems to have the size of the one on the hd3650 meaning that you'd have to dremel the heatsink a bit... It's a small easy mod anyway if you are careful....
-
This is exciting.
Can't wait to see if higher performance modules could be modded in.
After my warranty runs out at least.
In two years. ;] -
id like to try the 9600gt..hmm
-
-
VICTORY!!! I found the 9600m GT on Ebay. Problem is with the dollar where it's at at the moment the conversion from euro make the card horribly expensive... Link if anyone want to try: http://cgi.ebay.com/Carte-graphique...69198674QQihZ018QQcategoryZ3707QQcmdZViewItem
The thing is that the auction ended... -
. you can then proceed to take that card out and replace the Compal's..
Another place to start if anyone is interested. -
Yeah......

Here's a cheaper place to buy a 9600m GT GDDR 3 512mb
