hi guys I recently assembled a barbones Hel 80. Everything is working well except the audio.
The typical windows sounds (when booting up or shutting down) are normal but when I try to play a cd or dvd the music is good but the vocals seems to be cancelled out. Sounds like karaoke everything is just the band and backups even with headphones or external speakers.
    Any suggestions?

It reminds me of speakers wired out of phase (from my mobile dj and car stereo installer days) sorta but it sounds that way even when I play it through one channel.
BTW I have the full K-lite codec pack installed didnt help.

I think you might just be suffering from the bad frequency response of laptop speakers. It's almost universal with laptops.

Somewhere (can't seem to find exactly where with a quick search) there was a discussion about using different audio presets and EQ settings to help the speakers along. I remember it being reported to be huge help. It might be that some 'special effect' is 'helping' the signal, and it makes things sound bad.

I know it'd help if I could remember where, but at least it's a start. Dink with the audio settings and see if you can build up something that sounds a bit better.

What makes me think it's not a hardware problem:
I did google the disassembly guide for the EL80 (close enough, I think) and on the last page in the chapter I found a picture of the speakers. If someone managed to insert it backwards, it'd reverse both speakers polarity, as well as swapping the channels. I suppose it's possible that one of the speakers was wired backwards, I just think it's not very likely. :)

    Hope that helps. Cheers!

Thats definitely the problem, however as I said before I am getting the same audio through external speakers and headphones.
So if an audio connection was wired wrong it seems that it would have to be on the sound card.

All I get is a very heavy reverb and no vocals. I updated the audio drivers today but that didn't work I am going to reload all the drivers and see what happens then.

It sounds like if the vocalist is not in the same room as the band

Got it all sorted out now, I googled Realtek ALC883 drivers and downladed the latest driver.

After uninstalling the old one and installing the new one everything is perfect well for laptop speakers any way. Thankx DJPhil
