Hello, I recently got tired of lengthy boot times and read that stand by or hibernation was a good way to boot faster.

Although today I did a fresh reinstall of windows and the drivers ect, I put my computer into stand by for close to 20 minutes. When I pressed the power button, i got a glimpse of an error message then the computer restarted. It produced a dmp file and the windows event viewer does't shed any light on the problem. I seen on here people have problems with sleeping screens, thats not the issue i had.

Is Stand by or hibernation a bad idea? And does anyone use it successfully with my model of laptop?

My two cents, dont use those features on any system, not worth all the introduced points of failure.

    Two more pennies for you.

I use suspend/hibernate quite a bit. I have the occassional problem, but they're minor, and the convenience of closing up the machine and taking off w/o shutting down/powering up is great.

There was a problem with standby/hibernate on machines that had more than 1GB RAM I believe. It was a windows problem, and MS issued a hotfix for it. Find it here

I agree. These features seem to cause a lot of problems with Windows, particularly hibernate. I'm quite sure you're looking at a MS problem, not a fault of your notebook.
