okay, so I was in the process of updating the driver for the NIC (Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E gigabit) and after I installed the driver for it windows keeps saying it cant find the device driver. I cant do a system restore because I cannot find a point before I installed the driver. I've tried both the Realtek and Compal websites.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem or does someone have a way to fix it?

Did you try reinstalling the drivers that came with the machine?

no, I don't have them. Funny thing is, I download them from compal's website, and Vista either tells me that my driver is too old or it'll say that it found the drivers, but has trouble locating them.

There are Vista drivers here: http://service1.marasst.com/ But I don't know if they are the same as Compal's. The ver. they list for LAN is 6.189.1213.2006(WHQL)

when I install the drivers I get this message in the device properties window:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

I think I have the solution, I'll need someone to upload a copy of their installation directory C:\Program Files\Realtek\Vista_8169. It has to be from a Compal HEL80 machine though.

I'm at the point where I'll try ANYTHING to get it to work again.

I've probably tried that 20 times by now

another thing, I cannot system restore to an earlier date before the thing stop working either.

It seems that default driver installations won't work.
I have removed the original folder in which the drivers were in (look at a previous post to find the directory).
