Well you could download a program called Notebook Hardware control. It gives you battery readings among other things.
I am not sure about your second question but you could try HDTune to see if that works.

if you use any bios after 114, i think, will give you the standard windows battery icon in your system tray.

Notebook Hardware Control has a utility in it that gives you the specs of your entire computer, including the hard drive maker, model, RPM speed, and hard drive space.
This info is usually also on the sticker on the hard drive itself, just pull it out of your computer (when its off of course), and look for the relevant numbers (e.g. look for the numbers 4200, 5400, or 7200 for the RPM speed).
As you are new to the forum, I have no idea how extensive your tech knowledge is, so i'll also point out that you need to be very careful with your hard drive. It is fairly fragile, and should not be shaken, dropped, or squeezed hard on the top and bottom. Also make sure your not in a dusty room, and try to be touching something grounded when you handle it, such as a metal desk. Any static electricity can permanently screw it up, even if you don't feel a shock.
If you knew all that, sorry for being verbose, just trying to be through
