I was looking at the pictures of the HEL80 on powernotebooks.com and it looks like the battery sticks out quite a bit. Can any new owners of this laptop comment on this? Thanks.

It sticks out 3/4", and it gives you about 1 to 1.5 hours longer battery life than a 6 cell battery will.

Yup, we not only sell them...but I also own one!

I think just looking at the pictures I perceived the battery as sticking out further than it actually does, now looking at the notebook in person. The battery snaps solidly into place and is held in by two locks; it's a very sturdy design. I don't think anything will bump into it sticking out 3/4" (I frequently have my screen tilted back at an angle that's well past 3/4" past the back edge of the base), and even if it was bumped, it wouldn't go anywhere.

Due to the aesthetics of the notebook, the battery appears to be a contiguous part of the notebook, rather than some cancerous outgrowth. It was a little different at first, but I grew used to it quickly. Keep in mind that the battery is also not what you'll be looking at; out of sight, out of mind. And I certainly appreciate the extra hour of juice; I just can't beat the convenience of that. Being the last notebook standing in the coffee shop has its perks, particularly if you're like me and like working somewhere else other than at work. :)

Does the optional 6 cell battery stick out as well, or is only for the optical drive? Thanks for all your replies.

The 6 cell battery does not stick out.

I don't know what you mean about the optical drive...could you please clarify what you are asking?

As far as my question about the optical drive. - I was asking if the 6 cell battery would only go in the optical drive?

It does not go in the optical drive. You can only put one battery in at a time, so you can put either the 9 cell or 6 cell in the battery slot.

Thanks for all your answers Donald! Just one more question. - Does the optical drive actually pop out, where you can replace it with a hard drive or something else?

No, that bay will only accept the optical drive.
