Just wanted to throw this out to see if it's an issue for anyone else:

When I burn dvds or cds, the computer seems to have a fairly extreme slowdown. Mouse movement gets jerky, and I've noticed the "buffer level" in nero goes up and down constantly, as though the computer can't keep it full, which I think is also unusual. The problem is recurring and consistent, and I don't have much going on in the background.

Check if either your hard drive or DVD for some reason has returned to PIO mode in the BIOS. This happened on my old system, and caused me a lot of grief until I found the problem.

ahh.. it is indeed in pio mode. I'll reboot to have a looksee in the bios and be right back.

back: Hahah. You rock. I'd actually glanced right past the problem without realizing it when I checked to make sure I had it set to use dma "if available" in device manager without paying attention to what it was set to actually use.

In my case the issue wasn't bios, but was windows being "smart" -- details and solution here: http://winhlp.com/WxDMA.htm (must have been those install cds with the "special" scuff-marks...)

    Rep up. Thanks!
