Hello all. I just installed ubuntu 7.04 on my computer and it seems like everything is working out of the box except the ethernet port. I check my ifconfig and the eth0 is there along with my wifi. The wifi works perfectly and the drivers for the ethernet seem to be fine too but when I plug my ethernet cable into it, the port doesn't recognize a cable is plugged in. I verified this by looking at my router port and the light doesn't light up. I changed cables, verified they are not crossover and changed routers but it doesn't work. But booting back into windows it works perfectly fine.

Anyone else having this problem? How did you fix it if so. Thanks.

had some similar issues myself, tho not with ubuntu 7.04. older arch install had some issues with this. on ubuntu actually I mostly ran wifi only, so hard to tell to be honest. 'twas a kernel issue last time, a new kernel with new drivers fixed it straight away, so it could be just that for you as well mate.

im thinking you have to enable the eth0 interface. Try ifconfig eth0 up. Learnin unix myself, but cant test it as the machine crashed. If that does not work maybe you need to explicitly configure the ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway.

    networkconfig is your friend.
Ran my nic and wifi just fine when I used Ubuntu 6.06 and 6.10

The eth0 is up. I tried a static IP. I just can't get this to work because it won't recognize the cable is plugged in. I'm assuming a driver issue maybe. I tried a live CD of 6.10 and Kubuntu 7.04 and both don't work either.

try a different dist. I blame ubuntu kernel. 2.6.20 seems to have issues that way or was it 2.6.19. I run 2.6.21 without problems.

I have the same problem. LAN works with the liveCD. I recently upgraded my hard drive, and I decided to step back from dual booting Vista/ubuntu to XP/ubuntu. Now the LAN doesn't work. If it is a kernel bug, how do I upgrade the kernel to .21 in Ubuntu. I can only get 2.6.21

Still... Not having lan is kinda like the laptop being emasculated. I find the sometimes the liveCD lan works and sometimes it doesn't. It's a bit of a deal breaker.

Alright, I think I've figured out that the LAN problem has something to do with XP. When I reinstalled Vista, and I used the LiveCD, Ubuntu installed fine (LAN and everything). When I did it again with XP, the LAN stopped working. So I tri-booted all three and found that when I used XP and tried Ubuntu after it, LAN wouldn't work. But when I used Vista, and used Ubuntu right after it, LAN worked. So I think it may be something that XP isn't doing during the shut down sequence. Even when I reformatted the harddrive using a utilities CD, there seemed to be something left be hind by XP(Microsoft's last kick in the balls, if you will). Also, LAN works with other distros with either 2.6.21 or 2.6.22. Gusty uses 2.6.22, but you may not want to use the Tribe releases. Most distros are on 2.6.19-2.6.20. So unfortunately, the choices are limited.
