If you still have the key (see the bottom of the notebook or the above post), you should be able to call MS and ask them to replace just the media. You might also be able to call the manufacturer of your laptop and ask them to send you replacement CDs.

The only other legal way is to use the i386 method to burn your own XP CD from the files on your hard drive. I believe the HP forum has a few threads on the i386 method so check them out.

Any way that involves the internet, downloads, or torrents of the OS are illegal and risky at best (since they may have "other" software hacked into the system that aren't so good for you).

Your reseller can get you another CD, they need the serial number of your XP on the sticker. It takes about a week to get the new CD though.

aurawolf, how can a reseller get a user another DSP OS CD?

The CD is like cash...don't lose it.

If it is an OEM CD as opposed to a DSP CD it can easily be replaced by the OEM. To tell what you have, the DSP CD has the holographic label while the OEM has the OEMs name on it and it is not holographic.

As a microsoft reseller you can use the serial number of any standard OEM three pack or single pack windows, the one with the holograph, we do it all the time for our customers and the store I work for. If your a microsoft reseller there is a website you go to and input the information they need, if you need it let me know I can get you the url.

Somewhat related to this topic, is it possible with this BIOS to create a restore partition with a fresh install? That could be a nice thing to have.

If not, how could one back up an image of a fresh install to say a network drive, and recreate the HD from that?
