    Hey guys,
Does anyone know if the HGL-30 allows DVD/MP3 playback without loading the OS. Many Toshibas, Fujitsus etc allow you to playback a DVD or MP3 without starting windows. I am hoping to get one pretty soon and that looks like a pretty good option to have on a long flight

I don't think the HGL-30 does. But keep in mind that those media-boot options don't save you any battery life, really. It's just for convenience sake that they include them. On a long flight overall battery time will be more important than having a quickboot media player.

I know for a fact that it does not. And those systems that do that will load a stripped-down version of an OS to play the media. You could probably build something similar with Linux, should you really want to.

That was a feature that was thought to be included with the HEL80 when it was first released (if memory is not failing me right now ;)), but turned out to be a rumor.

As mentioned though--you will still be using your optical drive in that mode, so I don't know how much extra battery life you'd get from running on a media player.

I had a Dell e1705 a little while back--and it could do what you're thinking of.
