I recently got the Antec Notebook Cooler as a gift and have been planning to use it with my HGL30. However, the Antec Cooler sucks air from the bottom and expels it through the sides, while (if I'm not mistaken) the HGL30 draws air from the bottom and cools out through the side vent. So, this would probably be a bad combination, wouldn't it?

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I don't think either HGL30 or cooler will pull enough air to create a lack of air supply for either side. The cooler will pull some of the warmer air away from the bottom of the notebook, so that air brought into the system will be a little cooler.

are these really worth it? I don't think my HEL80 runs that hot...

For both Compal models I don't think their really that necessary, but since it was free I figured I might as well use it. I'd be pleased if it reduced the amount of fan cycling or the warmth of the left palmrest area when I'm gaming though. I don't think my HGL30 has ever gone over 48 degrees C so that's not a concern.
Oops, I guess the fans are reversible with some work, guess Ill give it a try too to see if it makes a difference. I had also read how people had setups similar to mine and how they had problems by the "vacuum" created by laptop and cooler (ie internal cooling system stopped working all together), which seems rather doubtful to me though. -
