Make sure that the laptop vents are unobstructed and that the laptop is resting on a flat surface. Also, use a canister of compressed air and a vacuum cleaner to thoroughly clean out the insides of the laptop for dust. Apply the vacuum cleaner nozzle directly to the fan vent.

If the problem persists, you should determine whether the heat is coming from the CPU or GPU. If its the CPU, you can undervolt and even apply high-quality thermal paste; lowering temperatures on graphics cards isn't as easy since there aren't so many ways to do it.

You can also use a standard air compressor with a trigger nozzle to blow the dust out of your vents. Use a paperclip (uncoiled) to secure the fan and set your compressor's air regulator to a reasonable PSI (usually 90PSI or less since the trigger nozzles usually have a max PSI of 90.)

is putting thermal paste on the cpu hard? i've never done it on a laptop.
All i know is there was a thing that popped up that said it was dialing down performance because of heat issues so it wouldnt get lock ups and stuff.

^ It is very straightforward if you have a laptop where the CPU and heat sink assembly are easily accessible; otherwise, things can get complicated, depending on the model. Still, I have found that applying thermal paste is always worth it as you can decrease your temps permanently by 3-10C, depending on the model and at no cost of functionality to the computer.

That said, you did mention that the problem seems to be coming from your graphics card; effects were turned down, you said. What graphics card does your laptop have?
What graphics card does your Compal have?

Arctic Silver 5 is a good choice.
