I had high temps also , my HEL80 is now 11month old. I cleaned fan from dust (there was pretty much of it) and temps went down by ~10C.
Then i repleaced the original thermalpaste with the Zalman Super Thermal Grease and idle temps went down by 10-12C
Atm it shows CPU 42C BUT i have v122b bios on what increased my temps even more so i guess it is even lower than that.

Yeah sorry about that. Usually just use the html button but was rushing out of work.

The brushed aluminum cover and keyboard trim is what sold me onto this beautiful machine. it's different, but doesn't stand out too much.

    Hi,

    I have a huge problem. :(

In the lower left corner of the screen (actually 1 inch from the edge), there is a very brite spot, caused by the Backlit, I think.

The spot is about 1.5 inches in diameter and almost every color turns to white in that area, exept black text.

What to do, any help?

Hi donald, I know that I didn't buy the lap from you since I didn't know you, but I will certainly consider you for my next (I'm a man of word). But here is the favor I need, I'm having nightmares with this cheap KB, and my reseller is giving me hard time, eventually I may just decide to buy another one, but I don't know the model of my KB and nor where to buy it, or if it exist a better KB, could you please guide me?

The only complaint I have ever heard about the keyboard is the flex that a few people don't like. Since you don't specify what nightmares you are having, I can only assume this is what you are talking about.

This has been discussed thoroughly for the HEL80 beginning at ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=60006&page=32)

The solution would be the same for the IFL90

Sadly, as you already know, we do not ship to Maryland because of MD House Bill 488 that requires us to pay $10,000 just to register to sell laptops.

That's nasty to charge $10k! I'm sorry to hear that, then I will wait when I visit Nevada to get my next lap :)

The keys have a "plastic" frame under, the base sensor which has a spring effect, so the plastic frame keeps the key in place. That frame is incredible cheap and bad engineered, one of it is broken so albeit the sensor still function, the key wobbles and it translates into and irritating feeling along with a broken bones noise (I broke my leg once playing soccer so I know what it is).

Would you please share with me the model of the KB so I lest to open the lap?

Do you know any KB vendor?

Can we install in IFL90 a better KB? (it doesn't matter if it is more expensive)

In Nevada you would have to pay sales tax. Better to just ship it to a friend or relative in another state.

As for your keyboard you should submit a warranty claim to your vendor and get it replaced.

If you just want to find a new keyboard for it (no, there is no other keyboard available for it) just Google for a Compal IFL90 keyboard.

since you system integarte compal laptops, can you share with me the model # of the KB?

I'm sending the KB back, but my reseller is saying that he might decided that I broke it, in that case I have to purchase one and I will not buy it from him. You have an excellent warranty, I hope the people of this forum realizes it.

There is a slide lock on the side of the socket into which the cable is to be inserted. Make sure that is pulled out (released), then insert the cable and slide the lock back into place.

    Hi

After over a year of happy computing on my Hel80 I'm thinking about maybe upgrading the cpu. Currently I have the T5600 1.83GHZ. Where can I find a list over the cpus supported by the Hel 80, and does the FSB speed have any say in what processor I can use?

    Thanks.

Thank you Donald, which is great to pass from 1.8GHz to 2.4GHz, it is a great upgrade.

How does it work, can we just buy the processor from you? Or you suggest we send you the laptop?

They can just buy the processor anywhere they can find one and install it themselves.

Or, if what they have is a PowerPro L 8:15 and they would prefer that we install it for them, they should call our Support to make those arrangements.

What kind of gain in perfomance could I expect when upgrading from the T5600 to say T7200 or T7600?

Gain in performance will depend a great deal on what applications you run. In real world uses you probably won't be able to actually "see" much difference in performance.

What OS are you running and how much memory do you have installed?

    Hey, all-
I am thinking of trying out Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron. Have any of you installed Hardy yet?
Does it work well on the HEL80? Does it install all the drivers?

    Thanks much,

    Ben

I run Vista x64 with 3 GB RAM on my Hel80 and just popped in a T7400 from a broken machine to replace my T5600. I can't tell a difference really. When measuring, there is a couple frame per second improvement.

I dual boot with Ubuntu 7.10 and everything works well except the Cam, haven't gotten that to work. I'm not sure if the fingerprint reader can be made to work either. I haven't tried Heron yet.

You will probably get more bang for your buck if you increase your memory to 3GB than upgrading the processor.

However remember for gaming your video card does most of the work.

I have never played yet any game that used all of my 2GB memory and wanted more. Even with all background programs on. So I don't know if it will be that much of a bang. From 1 to 2GB yes...

Hi all...I just bought a Compal HEL80 from a friend. I am loving it sofar...just a few questions. How much memory can it be upgraded to, and do you have any recommendations as to where to get the memory from?

Also my system does not come with built in bluetooth....is that easy to add, and again, where is the best place to get it?

My other question is overheating. I have noticed that it will sometimes overheat and shut off. I am wondering if this is because the person I bought it from overclocked it too much. I have read many people here say that i hardly ever overheats, so I am wondering why my machine is acting differently. I will get very hot after prolonged gameplay, and I have noticed that if I am playing World of Warcraft, If I have a few Firefox tabs open and am activley surfing on them, this is usually enough to get it to overheat. Its not a huge problem as it doesnt happen that often, but I am just curious about it Any suggestions?

I just bought a new hard drive on New Egg today to put in it...I cant wait!

I think it can only hold 3GB...i think. Someone correct me if i'm wrong

The bluetooth was easy to install. Kinda of tricky cause the slot you put it into is kinda small, but just be patient. I just did so myself a couple months ago. I got it from www.powernotebooks.com. It's called the Powerpro L 8:15 on that site.

Mine doesn't overheat. I would take it apart and clean out the fan. Did you do a fresh install of Windows?

I did do a fresh install of Windows....havent really tested it that much since I have, but the guy I bought it from had also done a fresh install of Windows. he put XP on it, I just put Vista on it. We shall see if it makes any difference.

Thanks for the link too, I think I might just have to get that :)

Here are the Original Specifications However you can go up to 3GB system memory and larger ATA (not SATA) hard drives.

Here are the pictorial installation instructions for the Bluetooth (you can buy one in our Accessories Store) and TV Tuner (if you can find one)

Overheating is generally caused by dust and other gunk clogging up the cooling system. While you have the bottom cover off over the CPU make sure the whole area, including the fans and vents, and between the heatsink and CPU are blown clean with a can of compressed air. Hold the can upright because you don't want that liquid stuff getting in there. See the 3rd picture from the bottom in the Picture Gallery

Also if you want to get memory you can try websites like www.newegg.com and www.tigerdirect.com

Do what Paladin44 said with the cleaning. I probably do it every other month. It depends on how dusty it gets where your notebook is. And try not to have it in a cramped place.

When you take your notebook apart for cleaning or installing any hardware turn it off and unplug the battery...

Hey all, i got a HEL80 off of ebay, barebones with no memory, cpu or hard drive. I got a t2050 off of ebay also...INTEL CORE DUO MOBILE T2050 SL9BN
1.60GHz 533FSB 2MB CACHE...the memory is from my old laptop so i know it's good. I can't get it to POWER UP!! =(....Either the laptop is defective, or the processor is defective....or maybe they're not compatible?? although i did alot of research, and the HEL80 has a socket M, and the t2050 is a socket m processor, so i figure it should work. anyone got any advice for me?? If i got a bad laptop, i'm gonna be so bummed out, it's not even funny ...
thanks in advance for any replys or help or anything!!!

    Jason

Also, if anyone sees this, could you post what processor you're using in your hel80??

Wireless Module not working at all.

OK, I formated my old hel80, which has the intel wireless module (I think) on it. I have tried all different drivers for it, Intels, Gygabites, Realteks, and none of them work. I have made sure the switch is turned on and everything. I am somewhat knowledgable about computers and I just cannot seem to figure this one out. It was working no less then 1 hour before I formated. There seemed to be a driver I used before (and I do not think it was intels) that worked great or good enough for me. It showed 4-5 bars in my icon tray, like a cell phone bar thingy shows on your cell phone and that worked great.

Is there anyone who has any ideas?

You didn't specify, but I assume you're running windows.

First install the switch driver.. That may be the only thing you need to do. If that doesn't work.

    1. Uninstall all the wireless drivers you've installed. Shut down.
    2. Verify which wireless card you're using (pull the cover on the bottom of the unit)
    3. Install the proper driver. - Reboot-
If that doesn't work, you try downloading and creating a live CD of Ubuntu. If the card works in Ubuntu, then it's a software issue in windows, not a hardware issue.

Laptop motherboards are completely proprietary designs. They are not like desktops that can use different brands and models of motherboards. So the motherboard in your HEL80 is an HEL80 motherboard.

If you CMOS battery is not working you will need to contact your vendor's support to arrange for its replacement.
