This is the US company that is the rep for Compal. Call them and ask. But this model is discontinued and I would bet the MB is more expensive to replace than just buying another notebook.

    Hey everyone,

I am wondering about an issue that occurred after two years of owning my HEL80. I have had only one issue with this laptop, and that was within warranty.

Now my issue is I cannot charge my battery, and by that i mean when I connect the power and battery together. All the lights except the Hard drive light flashes consistently. This has been ongoing for a while now. I have replaced the battery and the charger and I still have this occurring.

Will this be something on the System Board? if so where should I look.

I have done all basic disassembly and reassembly. And the laptop still works, I just don't have a battery.

32 bit Win 7 build 7000 is working flawlessly on my HEL80.

I understand there are some issues with the wireless switch and the 64 bit version though.

Figures, the 64bit is what I'm going to try out. what kind of issues? If the switch just doesnt work I'm ok with that, my wireless is always on anyway. but if the wireless flat doesnt work...

I'm using 64-bit Win7 RC. Wireless works fine when left on, but I don't think there is a version of the Wireless Select Switch program available. The hardware switch will turn wifi off, but it doesn't seem to come back correctly unless I restart. The other thing that doesn't work for me is the finger print reader. The finger enrollment process always crashes before it finishes.

How did you get wlan and wireless select switch to work. My wifi card is well recognized by the system but I cannot seem to turn it on (neither with hardware button nor Fn+F2). I have tried every version of wireless select switch to turn it on but with no success. My BT is on but I cannot seem to turn on wlan. I am on 32bit system.

    hello everybody, i'm new here

first of all i'd like to apologize for my english i live in germany, but try as hard as i can to write correctly...^^

    i also own a COMPAL HEL80 with an Intel T7200 CPU, 2GB DDR2667RAM, GeForce 7600go 256MB 120GB 5400rpm HDD and so on...

now i have some questions regarding this laptop, i read a lot of different threads, but i think it would be to much work to reply to every one of it or to open new ones... maybe some can answer all of my questions..

first of all i have an very old bios (105B i think) i found newer bios versions on this site, what are the benefits of the newer versions? any new options? upgrades or anything important...

is there any way to change the cas latency of the ram in the bios? or am i forced to use tools like memset??

i want to upgrade my system to 4GB ram (2x2gb) i already know that the chipset can handle "only" 3-3,5GB thats not the problem i plan to run vista 32bit on it, my question is can i run DDR2800 in the laptop of course in 667mode , but with good 800 with cl5 you can drop the latency to CL4 with 667mode (thats why the earlier question)...

also i read a thread about activating IVT on the HEL80 with newer bios versions, someone wrote that with 122B it is activated automaticly but with 123B you have to mod it, which one is true ? and what re the benefits of IVT only that i can run some emulation software or is there a performence boost too ?

my last question for now is, about the fan used for cooling inside the laptop,
is it sort of special or a regular stock fan, and can you replace it with a better one ?

thats it for now, i know its a lot of text but it would be great if someone could help me

    best regards

Recently had the old screen die on me in my hel80, so i decided to buy a new one. Got THIS Seeing as it is stadard 30 pins i assumed it would work fine. But on bootup i got this:

After a few secs the bottom half fades and I get a cloudy like haze, like:

I tried it in another laptop and it was the same, so a faulty inverter or cableing I ruled out.
Is this a sign of a screen not compatible or is something broken in the screen itself?

Just wondering if any of the HEL80 owners have upgraded to a more spacious 500gb+ hard drive. I know some of the old specs listed the maximum drive capacity that notebook could handle was 320gb?!?!
    Thanks.

I have Win 7 ultimate x64 installed on my HEL80, works great. Only bad thing is that webcam, fingerprint and card reader are not working out of the box.
I haven't even searched for any x64 drivers for these yet, mostly because I've never used them.
Here's a list to drivers you need to download for win 7 x64:
    Chipset
    Wireless
    Graphics
    Audio
    Ethernet

I believe those are the essentials.

kutjong, the webcam tends to have the drive downloaded by windows update automaticly after a few other priority downloads, or just ask it to seach for the driver directly in Device Manager. The Card Reader um just have to point in Device Manager to this driver. About the other must-have drivers you suggested, everything was installed by default, just had to allow Windows Update to download Nvidia (179.67) driver and manually the others, using DriveGenius. The only missing driver is for Fingerprint Sensor but don't use it, although I know it has a solution already.

All I can say that W7 is running smooth with HEL80, with a way better experience than XP and Server 2008.

Your best solution would be to email your vendor (where you bought it) with your serial number and request a later BIOS if there is one. Be sure to state what BIOS version you have, and what problem you are trying to correct.

    Batteries!!

Anybody replaced the Hel80 battery yet? I actually would prefer an aftermarket battery, not just for price, but because I would presume it likely that such a battery would be a more recent manufacture...

    Anybody?

 Soo bad news.. I heard the arc  and thought it was my 2nd or 3rd charger that blew out.. Well I have a 500W adjustable power supply so I cut my cord and hooked up 19V, plugged it in and I see my powerlight blink orange 4 or 5 times then stay on.. I'm thinking this is not going to be good. Well the laptop doesnt turn on. The only life I get out of it is the blinking powerlight when I plug in power. Finally I notice a spot on the side of the outer barrel of the power plug. It's like a tiny, melted crater.. I work in R&D so I'll take a look at it under the microscope and check it out on our PCB X-Ray. I'm thinking maybe one of the metal contacts on the inside shorted to the outer shell through the plastic inslater. Highly unlikely but maybe due to wear and tear. I checked for a short from the inner and outer barrell and got nothing. Well so I had the an extra cord I had cut off from my last charger that went out and it was still in good shape so I used it with the power supply and got the same behavior..

So I'm thinking that the powersupply on the laptop shorted out, or maybe the logic in the battery.. if it is the battery thats good cause I can replace that(for the second time). If the power supply shorted it's going to be difficult to track down.. Any advice, has someone else experenced similar problems? I've searched but I cant find the trobuleshooting guide and COMPAL no longer lists it on their driver website.

Hey guys, I'm thinking about upgrading my wi-fi to wireless N. The intel wi-fi link 5100 seems the best bet but I am wondering if I would get better service if I install wi-fi link 5300 and install a third antenna.
Basically what I am asking is if the 3 antennae are worth it?
I dont mind installing the third antenna, I am a tinkerer by nature.

The third antenna will give you 450Mbps instead of 300Mbps, assuming you have a 450Mbps router.

It will also give you more range.

    Thanks for your usual support.

Hello i forgot this post, and would be better to place my post here, better if a mod can delete the other post, thanks ;)

    Hi people,

Yesterday my graphic card crashed :( and I want to resurrect my laptop. I have been looking in internet to buy an another one but i founded that the HEL80 has an specific nvidia geforce go 7600 that is diferent to all other graphics from the same model.

So, there is anyone with his mainboard crashed that could sell me his graphic card?? :)

The graphic that i'm looking for, full disassembled should look like this:

    Hi guys,

i searched for the anwers here, but no one seems to have such question.

i have HEL80 with Geforce GO 7600. Everything worked perfectly for the past 5+ years (i am really satisfied) until suddenly it started to shut down itself randomly.

There is no pattern in this behaviour and it is sure NOT related to the OS, because at most times the shutdowns happen before it gets to start loading the OS.

Easy part first. i suspected the overheating, so I cleaned the cpu cooling area from dust, but that did not help. I removed hdd and all connected periferals, also tried ram modules one by one, but still my laptop managed to shutdown itself in this condition.
Altough the CPU heat sink was uniformely warm at its full length along with CPU itself during the time the pc was working I decided to change the heat sink (it is known issue that the gas gets out of the pipe sometimes and then heat sink fails to deliver). Did not help, still shuts down…
Then I changed the GPU heatsink and while the laptop was still disassembled, but already able to boot I switched it on and voila! it worked for quite a long time (I conneted the hdd and everything worked like charm).
I reassembled laptop back in on piece, but my celebration turned out to be premature – again it started to shut down itself randomly already during the boot.
If you have any ideas I would appreciate you to share them here.
I am curious to know if it can be fixed without replacing half the parts, because there is no reason for me to buy any new laptop while this one still perfectly matches my needs.
    Best regards,
    Martin

    Same thing happened to me.
But in 2 years time, not 5. Lucky you.

I would say use a new GPU and test it out.
But for practicality and sanity's sake, I'd say reward yourself and get a new laptop. ;)

    Where can I buy a keyboard for a HEL80c? I bought this as a PowerPro L 8:15 FORCE circa early 2007.
Spilled some coffee on the keyboard. The Powerpro still works, just with an external USB keyboard for now.

i know this is an old thread and all, but I have been looking for the origianl driver & software that came with this machine "HEL80C EL80 COMPAL powerpro" i got this with a pile of old beat up laptops and i was looking through the pile when I came across this compal, I realized i had a nice rig, I took it all apart and cleaned it up put it together and it works fantastic, the only thing is that I installed Windows 7 Ultimate, and so all it gave me was gen. drivers, I want to get, (if I can) original driver software that came with it. if anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

    Peace
