No I haven't had a problem in terms of software. I would just uninstall, restart, and then install again.

    Start with what INEEDMONEY said.

Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and "Remove" the Omnipass software. Reboot, and then reinstall it.

If it continues to have issues, call tech support.

Well, my machine is on order... now the waiting *starts large hourglass* Thank you Donald for all the time you put in here to give information you and the other owners of their stores that are around here (on this page or the ASUS page) do a great service for your industry.

Anyhow... this is what I'm getting:

    PowerPro L 8:15 SUPRA
    15.4" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) "Matte" LCD w/PCI-e nVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 w/256MB
    Intel® Core™ Duo T2500 2.0GHz Processor w/2,048k L2 On-die cache - 667MHz FSB
    Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound
2,048MB (2 SODIMMS) CORSAIR DDR2/667 Dual Channel Memory
    100GB SATA/150 Hard Drive at 7,200 RPM
    Combo 8X DVD/24x10x24 CD-RW w/Softwares
    Built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g
    Smart Li-ion Battery (9-Cell)
    Windows XP Professional

I know reviews have been done to death around here but I'll probably put something together on my own school page so I can show off the machine to some other people. The less Dells and HPs out there the better and I didn't know there were barebones systems until I started doing in-depth bargin hunting. :p

Thanks for your help, but unfortunately it didn't work. I called tech support, and they said they'd call the factory and get back to me ASAP. Other than this problem, the laptop is great. It's only a minor inconvenience to have to type in my password. If anyone has any other suggestions I'm all ears

question for those of you who use a backpack... will a standard 15.4" notebook backpack hold this laptop with the battery attached? Do I have to take the battery off?

I use a 15.4" backpack, the Wegner Synergy to be exact. Here is the link:

    http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Weng...34359/catOid/-14441/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

I find that my HEL80 fits very well with its 9cell, and i highly recommend the backpack, especially now that its on sale for 45$ or so.

Not exactly as you describe, but yes, I do have a spot of uneven lighting in the lower corners, depending upon what angle I'm looking from. It is roughly the dimensions you describe, but not really circular. I have no doubt that it's due to the type of light guide that this display uses. It's one of the tradeoffs of having a relatively bright matte display for less than a king's ransom, I gues.

i have this same shadow area and i'm glad to see that i'm not the only one who has this problem. i haven't found any dead pixels on my WSXGA+, but this dark area is starting to irritate me and i'm thinking about sending it in before my 15 days is up.

what are you going to do?

We have taken this issue of the gray area in the lower corners of the screen to Compal. Compal says this is the way the screen is and there is no "corrective" action that can be taken for it.

If this is reason enough for any one to return it just let us know if you bought it from PowerNotebooks.com and we will be happy to issue you an RMA for a return for refund.

Well im going to pull up a chair in this lounge. I just purchased my new HEL80 from powernotebooks.com. I just wanted to thank all of you regular posters on this forum. This site has been most informative and really helped me make a decision on my first ever laptop purchase and i definately think it was the right decision. And i would like to give a special thanks to donald at powernotebooks.com. All of the good things you have heard about him on this site are very much true. Good customer service goes along way. So anyone on the fence on what to buy and where to buy do yourself a favor and talk to donald.
Now the waiting starts. Hopefully i can give an update on my new toy soon.

You bought it at Laptops4u as well?

The fact it's allot more expensive here is because all electronic goods are over here. Doubt u woudl be able to get it cheaper from USA, u'll be taxed for sure on it, which will diminish any advantage u woudl have had.

yes. and i know why its more expensive. we have bigger taxes here. not just for electronics. i bought things from the us before, never got taxed on it. but expensive stuff like a laptop i would never buy in the us for warrenty reasons. in the end it would probably not matter much since i can get the taxes back after few months.

No. When watching a movie the DVD player is nearly quiet. plus if you want to have any type of good sound you need to be wearing headphones. And when wearing headphones it could be fully spinning and you wouldn't hear anything. the HEL80 is a nice laptop, if you plan on buying one I am sure you will enjoy it.

Also the noise from the DVD drive is not loud. It makes some noise but not that much more if even more noise than a normal CD drive spinning at high loading speed.

I do not have the shading you are having a problem with. I have run DPT and my HEL80 WSXGA+ screen does not have this effect on any color.

I have a Logitech V270 Bluetooth mouse that I use with my HEL80 and it works great with the Bluetooth drivers that came with the laptop. I have not bothered to turn off the touchpad so they are both working in parallel. The mouse is the only Bluetooth device I have tried so far.

Received mine today from powernotebooks, and I hate it. Haha, nah just joking, thought I'd mix it up a little. Actually, I love it. Great Service etc. Thanks Donald. I'm very happy, the only complaint I have is the keyboard flex and all I have to do to get rid of that is quit playing with this thing and go get some double sided tape. Haha I have to say i figured I wouldn't use the fingerprint scanner, but this thing is so cool, and it works so much faster than I thought it would. If the shading referred to in previous posts is present on all HEL80 matte screens, then I find it less than noticeable. I have yet to play a game on here, but I'm sure I'll be more than satisfied with that too. The bluetooth works great. I've already made a few calls through the laptop when it was connected to my Razr, which was cool, along with transferring files to and from. I got a Logitech V270 BT mouse and it's been working great. Apparently I'm just not talented enough to use the touchpad accurately, so I'm glad I went ahead and ordered the mouse last week. The battery life seems to be good, I wasn't paying much attention, but I think I got 3 1/2 hours or so while connected to the internet. Last, the looks: I find it to be very attractive, at least from my very unexperienced standpoint. I'm not a huge fan of the copper, but it's far from looking bad. The LED's are nice, I like the colors. The aluminum around the keyboard looks good in my opinion and the lid looks very nice.

I have quite a few questions following so I numbered them for easier reply.

Again, I'm very happy with my decision and would reccommend it to anyone. So far, I have had no problems, but I do have a couple questions/concerns. (1)First, when my battery power got low I hooked up the power cord and after about an hour and a half, the box in between outlet and laptop (no idea what to call this) was very hot. I could barely hold it. I've never had a laptop before, so maybe this is normal, I don't know? Also, don't know if it's relevant but it was probably just below 80* in the room (AC doesn't like to work in the top corner of the house). (2)Second, what is "Infineon Security Platform?" It's telling me to go into my bios and enable some chip or something? Is this recommended?

I also have a few laptop in general questions. I have a few things from this website bookmarked on my desktop, such as, the faq that tells you to download "regscrubxp?" (3)Is it necessary on a new computer that doesn't have all the junk that comes with a name brand computer? The other faq is optimizing your dual core processor. (4)Is this worthwhile, becaue I've read more recently somewhere, I think Donald posted it, that the performance gain is negligible. (5)Last, what's the best free anti-virus software out?

Well, that's about it. Thanks again Donald, and thanks to everyone who helped me decide what laptop to get.

    -Josh

The only noise I hear is when the DVD is loading the movie. After that, nothing. As for the sound, I was pretty amazed at how good it is without headphones or external speakers. The only reason I reluctantly began using the headphones from my Panasonic mp3 player is that the AC blows very loud in our livingroom. Otherwise, I could go without with most DVD's.

Does anyone else notice a high frequency noise coming out of the speakers and audio out when using the battery? I do, and it really bothers me. A quick solution would be nice, if there is one.

That high frequency sound occurs for me too. No solution here, except to drown the sound out with other noise, which is pretty much any noise, in my case.

    1. That is normal. They do get hot, almost (but only almost) too hot to touch.
    2. The Infineon Security Platform is about security typically at the Enterprise size corporate level. You will probably have no use for it. However for detailed information go to http://www.infineon.com/cgi-bin/ifx...hannel/productCategories.jsp&pageTypeId=17099
    3. & 4. People will argue about this, but as I reported earlier the reason you don't find OEMs doing it is that their testing shows negligible difference in performance. See my post earlier in this thread
    5. There is a great read under our Knowledge button in the header of our website about good free Internet Security software.

    Great! 42°C, quite okay.
Not that loud, but loud enough to bother me. It also seems a driver issue to me. I don't hear the noise during boot up.

I just got my HEL80 2 weeks ago and am very happy with it. I have two questions though.

I have been playing around with the integrated webcam in windows movie maker. The picture quality isn't bad at all and I know its a vga quality camera so I can't expect it to be really high end. However i was wondering if it is normal if i get about 5 fps in the preview window as well as with the recorded video. I recorded at 320x240 and the cpu load doesn't seem too high, so it can't be due to compression that the fps is so low. The frame rate also has alot to do with the quality settings, but I can't seem to be getting anything more than 5 fps. Has anyone achieved higher frame rates and if not, could anyone confirm this?

Also I use the s-video tv-out with nview from nvdia. The tv-out looks like a 7-pin s-video connector is needed. However I've read that you can just use a standard 4-pin s-video plug. When I did this the picture did show up on the tv, but I can't seem to get the proportions right. Only the top 2/3 of the screen is covered and it seems to go on outside the screen on the right. It almost looks like the aspect ratio of the WSXGA+ is duplicated on the tv. I tried different resolutions, but the image remains stretched wide. Does anyone know how to configure nview to make the image fill the screen the right way or must I maybe use a 7-pin connector?

p.s. i also had some keyboard flex, especially on the right, but the double-sided scotch tape solution worked nicely!

The problem was discovered and solved. Thanks to tech support it was figured out that mcafee viruscan was causing the problem (It was a free version provided by my college). I'm curious to know if anyone else who uses mcafee has this problem. Tech support was very helpful, two thumbs up!

I can't buy from Powernotebooks and it seems that the Hel80 for sale in the Netherlands have another (less quality) case. In Europe Zepto sells notebooks who look very similar to the Hel80, can anyone confirm or deny that this is these are the same? Thanx in advance
