Hey guys! I'm planning to buy a new Hel80, but I'vefigured that buying memory from the retailer is immensely expensive. So I've been wondering what kind of memory the Compal Hel80 (non-VBI) can support. I got a few questions listed below.

    1. Can the Hel80 Support unbuffered (unregistered) memory? If I use unbuffered memory, what effects will it have?
    2. I'm pretty sure the Compal Hel80 has standard DDR2 200-pin sodimm slots but just checking, would memory like the one found here http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2340137&CatId=150 fit in the Hel80's memory slot?
Well those are the questions I have about the Hel80's abilities but I also have a few general questions on memory.
    • What is NON-DOA memory?
    • What is MO3 ELPIDA memory?
    • Whats Non-ECC memory?

    Thanks for all your help!

It depends on which reseller you're going with. I personally didn't feel like I was overcharged for my RAM. Spending a little more may be worth it for you so that you have one warranty covering the entire system--including the RAM upgrade--rather than one for the system and another for your own RAM sticks.

I believe it will accept most standard 200-pin sodimms like you said. Hopefully Paladin44 or XoticPC can confirm it for you.

I ordererd mine from powernotebooks, and I honestly didn't feel like it was much different buying myself vs having them install it.. They use quality fast-as-it-gets ram modules, and all ram has lifetime warranty anyways.. Add shipping and extra wait for delivery and it wasn't worth maybe 10 bucks..

And.. if you are that hard-up for 10 bucks, I'd bet if you told the place you are buying it from that you can't push it.. they would laugh at you.. and probably let you get by with 10$ less.

Thanks, but I'm not really saving $10, its savings around $110 but its not done by the builders. Basically I'm wondering can the Compal Hel80 support unbuffered memory, or does it only support buffered (registered) sodimms.

The tigerdirect 1 GB RAM you're looking at costs $109.99. The cost to upgrade up to 2 GB of 667 MHz high-quality-name-brand RAM is $220 on Powernotebooks. It's only $75 to upgrade to 1 GB of RAM--cheaper than $110 + shipping + no compatibility questions & seperate warranty.

Where are you buying the system?

Well I'm planning to buy it from powernotebooks but the tigerdirect one is just an example of what the memory looks like in terms of the # of pins. I'm actually buying it from a friend who has 2 to many 1gb SODIMMS and is offering me the both for around $50. So it costs $220 to upgrade to 2gb of memory from powernotebooks and $50 from my friend. As a student in high school, my mom is making me pay 60% of the cost for the laptop so any savings will help. Effing school dances cost too much these days, haha...

    That, and new tennis racquets...

Oh, so if anyone knows the answer to these 2 questions it would be immensely helpful.

    1. Can the Hel80 Support unbuffered (unregistered) memory? If I use unbuffered memory, what effects will it have?
    2. I'm pretty sure the Compal Hel80 has standard DDR2 200-pin sodimm slots but just checking, would memory like the one found here http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...0137&CatId=150 fit in the Hel80's memory slot?

Ask powernotebooks. Send them an email or give them a call. They will be more than willing to answer that question and should be able to answer it handily. They know the systems they sell and are very friendly.

    1) Yes. Unbuffered is standard in laptops and computers that aren't workstations or servers, pretty much.
    2) You want either PC4200 (533MHz) or PC5400(667MHz) DDR2 memory. As long as the memory you are buying matches that description, you should be fine.

Nope, some manufacturers calls it pc-5400, others pc-5300.
    Its the same thing really.

It has to do with how they round their calculations. Same thing. Good luck with your system.
