I wanted to pass on some late breaking news on the HEL80.
We have been recently informed that the Matte WSXGA is going to be discontinued on the HEL80.There may be a new model coming when Santa Rosa is released with WSXGA. It is all speculation right now.
Will keep you all updated when more info is released

It is a shame, they had a one of a kind display in the 15.4" WSXGA arena.

i found out the hard way... ordered a nice new PowerPro 8:15, 2 gigs corsair mem, artic silver... got a call yesterday from powernotebooks saying they ran out and wont be getting anymore help80 high resolution systems. so i had to switch over to the sager model... no artic, no corsair, no warranty next day shipping!!

I wonder why that display got the axe. It seems to have been popular. I'm happy with mine.
-
Thanks for sharing that, Justin. It really is a shame that this display (that I'm looking at right now) has been discontinued.
I'm hoping it's a "Compal decision" rather than a sign of the industry abandoning matte screen in general. Glossies do seem to be overwhelmingly popular at this point.
Hopefully the rumor about a new WSXGA with Centrino Pro pans out. Matte would be nice too....

This has got me a lil' worried. I hope what happened to Jonnie Pee doesn't happen to me. Ordered mine a few weeks ago but got backordered. Haven't got a call yet for xotic, but they were really helpfull when the backordered occured.

We will be able to fulfill existing orders but only have a couple left for new orders. Please pm me and I can confirm the details on your order with XoticPC.

we are gonna be "the lucky few" cool
i wondr if it will make our machines that much more desireable

I guess I ordered at just the right time; a week after Milestone Canada (and others??) made the T5500 standard instead of the T2400, and a week before they jagged in the matte screen

whats santa rosa?

[edit] Santa Rosa platform (2007)
The code-name Santa Rosa refers to the fourth-generation Centrino platform, scheduled for release on May 9th with the following features:[1]
second generation Intel Core 2 processor (code-named Merom) that uses Socket P
800 MT/s front side bus with Dynamic Front Side Bus Switching to save power during low utilization
Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset (code named Crestline) with Intel's GMA X3000 graphics technology
Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n mini-PCIe Wi-Fi adapter (code named Kedron)
NAND flash-memory caching (code-named Robson)
EFI, a successor to BIOS
Intel Dynamic Acceleration (IDA), better Windows Vista Aero support [1]
The chipset update may or may not include WWAN Internet access via HSDPA (code-named Windigo) codeveloped with Nokia [2][3]. After announcing a working partnership, both later retracted the deal citing the lack of a clear business case for the technology. [4]
Support for WiMAX (802.16) was originally scheduled for inclusion in Santa Rosa but appears to have been delayed until Montevina in 2008 [5]. There have however, been reports that WiMax may still be introduced in 2007.
The Santa Rosa platform will be branded as "Centrino Pro".[6]]
The Mobile 965 Express chipset is rumored to be more power hungry than the Mobile 945 Express, consuming 13.8W vs 8.7 by the 945. -
thanks, my laziness has failed me yet again.

We still have a few of the WSXGA+ screens left as well.
-
Get 'em while you can! It's really a great screen.
-
hey do u guys think it would be smart to buy the hel80 wsxga barebone now. Then wait for prices to go down for everything else so i can put it together in the summer?
-
LOL they take away the best thing ??

I don't think you will be able to find an HEL80 WSXGA+ barebone anymore.
Let us know if, and where, you do. -

bah!
I have been waiting patiently for compal to refresh the hel80 with the santa rosa and a geforce 8600 card. The matte screen was one of the major selling points! I really hate glossy screens. They are next to useless outdoors, unless of course, you need to shave, do your hair or put on makeup.
I'll be checking in periodically to see if this is truly the end of one of the best laptop screens ever. -
yeah T_T since i cant get that hel80 matte screen, im ordering the hgl30
Hel80 Wsxga :(
