    Hello,

I have an Everex XT5000T Laptop and went to sleep with it in hibernation. After waking up and turning it on, it worked for a couple of minutes, then froze and when I rebooted, the screen won't turn on but I can hear the fan running. Nothing else. The only green light that flashes when I turn it on is the battery charger becuase it's hooked to the electrical outlet. There's no sounds of the hard drive booting or screen movement. I was told I can retrieve my personal documents by taking the hard drive and put it into an external hard drive then hooking it up to another laptop.

However, I'd also like to fix this laptop. Any suggestion on what could be causing it and how to fix it? Please let me know. Thanks!

Take out the battery and wait a few minutes. Do not put it back. Plug in wall adapter and if you have external monitor, also plug that in (use F3/F4/F5 button to switch to external if needed later).

Now turn it off (hold down power button for 5 seconds each time) and on and see if anything boots. Note any sounds/beeps and anything on either internal or external screen.

Little or no response probably means bad motherboard or more, but need to exclude bad screen/connection/etc.

If you see signs of life (a bootup beep - bios ok, flashing cursor, bios screen, onboard instructions), then the OS or HD may have crashed.

Not to revive a very dead thread, but I was searching for info on my own laptop (the same one you have) and came across this.

I just wanted to inform you (provided that you haven't A. threw it out or B. already fixed it) that there is an issue with the Everex XT laptops that required the motherboards to be replaced. Everex is now defunct, but there is still hope for your laptop, if you are willing to take the thing apart & work on it a bit.

If you browse on over to the Everex XT5000T forum at [H]ard Forum, you will find several guides.

The issue stems from the GPU and Northbridge on the motherboard constantly changing temperatures, from extreme hot to cold. This caused cracking in the solder that connects the GPU and/or Northbridge to the motherboard.

What you have to be willing to do is "re-flow" the solder on these chips. This isn't a difficult task & only requires a cheap tool that is available at Big Lots and several other stores for around $20. It requires a Heat Gun capable of 400+ °C (I believe 490°C is sufficient to melt lead-free solder). For a more thorough guide, search [H]ard Forum.

This is no guarantee that this will work, but I would venture to say that you had the same issue as everyone else (including me). I was lucky enough to get mine replaced, however this task took over 3 months and a conversation with my lawyer. (Mentioning lawyer made them buckle, fix it, and send it out).

All that aside, I wish you luck with this. Its a great laptop - I have yet to find something that is as well-rounded as this thing. The video card is still powerful enough to handle most new games & the CPU & RAM can now be upgraded to do so even better (and for under $100).

If you aren't willing to do this yourself (or not at all), I'm sure there are plenty of people on that forum who are willing and able to do so to help you out - or would take on the project if you want to give it to them to keep.

I wouldn't mind actually tackling this project myself if you don't want it anymore :D
