    Hi,
I haven't used my laptop for a couple weeks and when I started it up today, it had a band about 1/8 inch tall running across the screen as shown in the photos I've attached to this post. Any ideas what could cause this? I updated to the latest video driver to see if that would help, and changing the screen resolution doesn't change the position at all. I've upgraded the memory and processor, but I did that over a year ago. The only recent addition was a bigger battery, but I don't see how that would affect the display. Just in case though, I put the original battery back on and it didn't make any difference.

So, where should I start troubleshooting? TIA for any help you can give.

Given that you upgraded the driver, it is almost certainly a hardware issue; it could be as simple as the video feed cable being loose or as bad as the GPU on its way to failing. I don't think that the LCD itself is the problem, though.

It looks kind of like an LCD panel or display cable problem. You can try to take the laptop apart and make sure both ends of the cable are secured. Also look for damage near the screen hinge. It could unfortunately be an LCD problem, though. I have seen laptops with horizontal/veritcal line problems and sometimes those laptops were abused (not that yours is). A new LCD screen would fix the issue on these.

Thanks for your responses guys. I've hooked it up to an external monitor and it works fine, so I think the gpu is okay. I'm leaning towards a problem with the cable as both of you suggested. When I have some free time I will take it apart and see if I can fix it.!

    Thanks again!
