    Hi all,

I have had an HEL80 for around 9 months now, and I've always felt like it runs fairly warm. Tech support has told me that the temperatures it's running at are acceptable, but it's shut down immediately due to overheating (I assume) twice this afternoon. It's about 70 degrees F in the room, no A/C or anything, and the computer is running at 82-83 degrees C right now according to Intel's Thermal Analysis Tool. When I had just booted it up after a shutdown, it was running in the mid-60's with essentially no processor utilisation. Does this seem normal or excessively warm? Everyone says it's a cool-running notebook, so this performance really surprises me. Would it help to do a BIOS or chipset upgrade, and is there any other diagnostic stuff I can do? Thanks in advance!

Well if you feel that its warm then take a look at this thread
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=134050
even though it talks about gpu overheating it still has some helpful suggestions.

60 is okay(alittle warm) if your idleing/on your desktop/not doing anything intensive.

80c is definitely not okay unless your gaming

Your HEL80 BIOS? Try to clean all dust from your HEL80, especially look at the cooler. Clean old thermopasta and use new like Artic Silwer on CPU.

Check out this thread when you get a chance. It should help out a lot!

Other than that, what is your BIOS and are the fans running okay? Is there anything blocking your exhausts? I'm using 116B as my BIOS and have never had a problem with heat. For more detail, my idle processor temps are 42-48 degrees C (48 is when the fan kicks in and stops at 42-43). I've got AS5 and propping the laptop up using bottle caps (cheap fanless cooler). Room temp is usually 80 degrees over here too.

I hope you solve your dilemma! ;)

Thanks to all for the quick responses. I should get around to cleaning the fans, but in the meanwhile as far as I know they are working properly, though perhaps I'm missing something; there appears to be a slight breeze coming out of the one on the bottom left (on the right side, if viewing from underneath), and to the left of the keyboard on the side. My BIOS is pretty old-skool, namely 101B; would an upgrade potentially help? Also, I have AS5 on the notebook as installed on purchase, so I'm surprised it's running as hot as it is...

I'd recommend upgrading the BIOS if you're comfortable in doing so. Just read and follow this. From what I've heard, 116B, and 114B, are much better when it comes to the fans and heat.

Keep us posted on what ends up working for you! :)

Thanks mate; I'm totally comfortable with upgrading the BIOS, I was just reluctant to because everyone says don't do it unless you're expressly told you should for some reason. :p I'll let you know how it goes.

PS, cleaning out dust seems to have dropped idle temperatures back into the 50's. :)

Yes, and now I've also upgraded to 121B and must say it's a lot cooler that way/doesn't run the fans as much. It's a definite thumbs-up bios version ;]
