This is a how I replace battery cells in a 1000 series Averatec laptop battery. No diagram is provided because all placement is obvious when the case is opened.
For Safety purposes and general information you should view How to rebuild a Li-Ion battery pack before you open the battery case. The battery cells can explode if mistreated or shorted. Safety glasses are a must.
I would say the most difficult part is the opening of the Averatec battery case because it must be reused and be able to fit back in the computer. The case is about 1/16 thick and I used a hacksaw on the back and side seams. On the sides it is not necessary to follow the seam. Just hack to the front seam from the back seam. A Dremal tool could be used to split the case. (If you find a better way to open the case, please add to this posting) At this point I was able to pry the halves apart and the front seam (battery connection side) split with very little effort. When the case is opened you will find six 18360 cells, two small black sensors, a control board, and battery connection board. None of these items are permanently fixed to the case and come out as a unit. The cell are connected in series and are tabbed together as one unit. There is no need to cut any wires, tabs, or ribbon. Wiggle the components out of the case and make a sketch of the wiring and connections. Note the alignment of the battery cells. This will be your diagram for replacement. I did not reseal the battery case. I used half inch masking tape as straps so I could recell again without a hassle. Put it back in the computer and it started charging immediately.
I would think the above procedure would work on any computer battery. I did not find it rocket science!
I found it was less expensive to buy a six-cell battery on Ebay and use theses cells for replacement. I found a new HP battery for $27.00 with free shipping. I recommend that you use major manufacturers batteries: Japanese or American make.
I had a specific reason to recell and it was not economy. The 1000 series is about four years old and I figured that the batteries that were "new" would also be the same age. Since LI-ION batteries deteriorate with age, I felt I could do better with "New" battery cells then buying a new battery.
