I was just wondering if anyone could explain how noisy the HEL80 is. It is the perfect laptop for what I need but I hear the fan comes on every minute or so and is kind of noisy. So in a silent class would someone across from me (5 feet or so) be able to hear it coming on constantly?

Bonus question :) does anyone know how the noise compares to an Asus A8JS?

    Thanks so much

A few things to note... at my college almost everyone uses computers in every class either lab machines, or their own personal notebooks so noise wouldn't be an issue... However... After upping to a newer BIOS and using RMclock *which I use on all my machines* to undervolt and whatnot, the fan is rarely on / audible *aka if it is on I can't hear it*. While gaming I know it is on because I can feel the warm air from my left hand, but I've yet to hear it over my 5.1 or headset.

OK great to know, that could save me about $300 since the a8js is a little smaller/more powerful than I really need. Thanks.

Well, one thing that the A8Js has in its favor is its smaller footprint. I imagine that would make finding room for it on a desk or in your bag a little easier than a 15.4" system. Perhaps the HGL30 is also worth consideration?

As mentioned by pyro, you can undervolt and do some power settings to lower the fan activity.

IMO, very quiet when idle or just some browsing or office tasks.
But I let it constantly do CPU intensive tasks, hey that the reason I bought this power monster :D
But even then, compared to my previous laptop, a Clevo D500P, you can't hear the HEL80.
If you put some music on, you won't hear it.

What are the mean times between fan starting up when you undervolt it?

When running for normal desktop / programming / internet the fan is off/lowest setting in my house with I keep about 68F all year round. Those settings I generally can't tell apart unless I try and feel heat blowing out. I use a nostromo n52 gamepad while gaming with my notebook though, so it's more regular that I feel the heat being exhausted while gaming.

Right now as I type this the fane is off or to slow to notice.

Well dude, i just bought my Hel-80 back in november and i use it in class all the time. I can tell you this. its so quite that you wont even know you had a fan. the loudest thing i have ever heard was the DVD drive spooling up, and even then its not that loud. Overall this machine is a pretty quiet beast. :D
