I did a simple test today. I started my Zepto and an old Thinkpad A31 (1.6GHz, 512MB, 80GB 5400, 32MB graphics, XP Pro) at the same time. Heres the results:
A31 total resume with idle hdd: 40sec
Zepto resume to desktop (not idle hdd): 1m30s
now heres another not so cool thing:
the A31 was at the login screen when the zepto still were in the BIOS screens. Now that is not so good...

A couple of points:
1. There are some options in the BIOS for the extent of checking during the bootup state.
2. Make sure your default boot device is the HDD.
There may be other aspects in the BIOS which slow down the boot process. Make sure you disable the TPM unless you are using it.
Vista normally seems to be reasonably quick to return from hibernation although this probably depends on the amount of physical memory you are using. I get the impression (I may be wrong) that anything in the pre-fetch cache gets written to the HDD during hibernation but is not part of the immediate resume process - it can be reloaded into RAM after you have got running.

1. Have enabled fast-boot and disabled all boot time diagnostics
2. default is hdd
3. tpm disabled
but the fact that the IBM only goes trough the splash and one screen very briefly, and the Zepto goes trough maby 5 screens. Thats the annoying part. Vista itself resumes pretty quick -
Do you mean from totally of to windows or resuming from standby?
You cannot compare WinXP and WinV! You should try both XP if you want to make a fair comparision.
However I agree that the Zepto BIOS is slow. It takes longer then the actual boot time!
I have TPM enabled and BIOS bootup became slower.
Intel Turbo Memory have proven very useful for Vista. My laptop boots much faster (have not clocked) also the turn off is really fast maybee 5-10 sec. Stand by is maybee 3-4s to enter and 1-2 s to exit standby and enter windows. -
turn off 5-10 sec. ? I do it in 5 sec. without Turbo Memory
-
Im resuming from hibernation, not shutdown or standby
n0elia-> shutdown XP? -
No, Vista. why?
-
Mine take A LOT longer, but I have a 160GB 5400rpm, you have a 7200rpm.
-
it's not that, it's a little tweak
i'll post it here later!
-
Oh be my guest shorten my shutdown time
-
hold down ctrl and shutdown via task manager totally brutal!
doubt it'd be good for your computer though..
-
well you can allways hold the power button for 5 sec too
-
Here's the tweak:
Copy this text into notepad:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="10000"
The number indicates how many seconds before Vista kills a service/app. It's written in miliseconds, ex. 10000 ms = 10 s
Default value is 20000ms = 20s
Mine is around 5-6000.
After you've pasted and edited the text, save it as .reg file
Now it becomes a registry key. Now run it
You can always modify it, just rename the file extension to .txt and you'll be able to edit it, and ofc rename to .reg again -
so instead of waiting 20seconds now you wait 10seconds, thus cutting down time to exit from system.
Wait, so you have applications hanging when shutting down? -
Yes exactly...
The only downside is, if you have LOTS of unsaved sessions, they will not be saved, because you've cut down the time. But that's not a problem until you go down below 2-3000 -
allright thx!

I've just checked my 6024W resume time. From pressing the power button it took about 18s for the Windows resuming message to come up and the log on-box was ready in 45s from pressing the power button. Not bad for 3GB RAM + Turbo memory.
John
How slow is the BIOS really???
