Sounds ridiculous... but here are some steps you can take to minimize crack formation on the case. (Don't think that by opening/close gently that these won't develop!)

To Open: Gently open the tab so the notebook is barely open. Grab the edges of the notebook about 1/4 length away from the hinge of the notebook. Slowly apply force until the notebook pries open. (Use your thumbs to guide along the edge, (don't touch the LCD screen)

To Close: Grab the back of the notebook with your hand, and have your thumb aligned with the sides. Your hand should be resting along the sides of the notebook, near the hinge, with your fingers behind the LCD screen near the bottom.. Gently pull toward you with both hands equal pressure. The notebook should slowly close while minimzing the moment of force about the hinge.

    Hope that helps!

Since doing this procedure, the cracks haven't grown in size.

    Edit:
Talking to a few people about such an issue, we all agreed the problem comes from the fact the hinge has a lot of "give", and once it the hinge catches, its extremely stiff. The casing is extremely flexy, (just close your notebook and press down lightly on the averatec logo and you'll see what I mean.) So when you close down on the notebook from the front edge, the force literally stretches the plastic casing, and cracking issues insue about the axis of rotation (the hinge). I was thinking about drawing a forces Free Body Diagram of the situation, but I doubt such a thing needs a scientific explanation [|)]

    Edit2

Just called Averatec to ask them about this problem again, and if anybody has called in with the same issue. Support told me its due to excessive use and lack of care. UGH.

Regardless of how you open the top(or LCD panel), always do it from the middle. This will reduce any 'twisting' of the panel -however slight - and thus minimize cracking and undue stress on the hinges.

quote:
Maybe you sensed the tone of resentment in the post. Who knows.
I'm just a little pissed off that the notebook would crack in the first place.

Maybe the advice did help someone out [)]

I can't help but agree with your feelings. It's pretty sad that such a decent lappy gets a bad rap because of a simple design flaw/cheep material/whatever. But to be the devils advocate for a moment, I have friends who have sunk $$$ into brandname laptops just to have them fail in one way or the other. Granted they got the issue fixed by their perspective manufactures. I don't recall if you or another poster had tried to have Averatec fix your case...just to get told off...but me personally, i wouldnt give up trying.

After working in the support industry for over 5 years, i know from experience that if a person has a issue that truly is no fualt of their own, and they push often with the same story (which sholdn't have to happen...but it does) then they usually find a person who's willing to help. And considering the volume of posters concerned with, or suffering from this design flaw/cheep material/whatever, I think its worth fighting for.

Somebody mentioned that Averatec support comented "we dont have any record of complaints on (case cracking)". So maybe those of you that do truly have a quality issue need to constantly harrass their "care" department untill they get the picture. I know I'm watching mine daily for anything, and if i find something i will not relent until they fix it. Carelessness my fat arse! [}:)]

I've had my cover changed once due to cracking, now with the new cover I open only from the middle, and there's no sign of cracking whatsoever !

I only wanted to take position, I totally agree with the advice[ :D]
