I am on dial up, yeah I know that sucks but there is no other choice. I would almost move in order to get high speed internet- almost. Anyway here is my problem, and I do not know when this problem started until it was discovered a few months ago when people started complaining our phone was always busy.

I have a 6128H and have to take out the phone line to free up my phone for any incoming or outgoing calls. I have tried everything under the sun to fix this little problem and get nowhere fast. If I plug the phone line in the laptop, something starts using it immediately as best as I can figure. I can pick up another phone in the house and there will be a busy signal, and that is without the laptop even being connected to the internet.

I have to keep the phone line unplugged until right before going online then I plug it in and connect real quick before it goes busy, thats what I have to do just to get online each time. Anybody have a clue on how to fix this, or what I can check? I did a complete reinstall with the recovery cd and that didn't even help so it must be something major! Help help help.... there has to be a solution!

Sounds like you have the connect when needed turned on. Go to Internet option s in control panels and under connections select never dial. Then apply. Now when you need to use it select ports/<modem> rt click then dial, do the same to disconnect.

Thank you for the suggestion. I was hopeful your suggestion would work as connect when needed was indeed checked when I looked. I unchecked it as you said, unfortunately it didn't make any difference to the modem. I don't think the modem in this laptop is something you can just pull out and change.

No you can't replace the modem, it's builtin to the MB.

I have 2 different modem/ports on my nb. None of them dial unless I tell it to connect.

Check your internet option CP and see if you have it set to connect when needed.

I believe I only have one modem port on the laptop. It is set to never dial a connection in internet options.

It's looking like it may be more than a setting problem. I have checked all settings and compared them to my desktop but there is always the possibility there is something I am overlooking. While I was looking around the web the other night, I read about a similar problem on another site(don't remember where), and it was saying lightning may have zapped the modem- another possibility, but I hope thats not it.

Make it's NOT the default connection, change to lan amd see if that helps.

Nope, that didn't change anything either. I give up on it being a settings issue, it has to be a bigger problem. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you are having a windows networking problem it you can not stop it from dialing. Unless you have a root kit installed that is using your pc for a relay.

put this line in the modem setting "&f" (without the quotation marks). This will reset the modem to factory setting.
