Never tried dual monitor... but I've run beryl and compiz with this system in the last 3 version of Ubuntu... just use synaptic to get the nvidia binary driver, then 'sudo nvidia-xconfig', then ctrl+alt+backspace (test by alt+f2 'glxgears'.. this should be smooth fps if 3d ON). Should give you a control panel you can run alt+f2 "nvidia-settings". I think that will let you run dual outputs.. otherwise, last time I talked to someone about setting up my display I loaded up gnome x-chat and went to irc.freenode.net #ubuntu and had someone walk me through my issue.

Once you are sure 3d is working,
    http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Ubuntu
(pick your version, and you will get a nice script to paste into the terminal)
should give you a red ruby in the upper right tray that lets you configure all sorts of stuff.

something makes me think there is a problem with this script for feisty... it's been a while though...
    I think on this line:
    sudo apt-get -y install beryl emerald-themes nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel-common
    I changed it to:
    sudo apt-get -y install beryl emerald-themes
because I already nvidia binary installed.(installed using the script screwed up my x windows... re-installed ubuntu feisty, used synaptic to get binary drivers... restarted X to make sure it worked, then ran script with modified line as per above..

Have no idea on what versions are where... as a general rule of thumb, stick to the repo's when you can for best compatibility.
