I'm not sure if anyone else has experienced this problem. It happens occassionally and it is extremely annoyiing.
Essentially what happens is that I will be using my computer and all of a sudden the screen turns "off". I think the backlight turns off because I can barely make out things on the screen, but it is extremely dark.
Anyone know how to fix this? Is it an overheating problem or a bios problem or a driver problem?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Does this happens while connected to the power adapter?
-
Yeah. I think so. I haven't really paid attention to it.
-
The reason I'm saying this is that when you are not connected to the power adpater, to save battery energy the laptop goes into a power saving mode and it does get the creen darker, but I would not say up to the linit you cannot see anything though.
-
Yeah. The screen looks completely dark, like someone turned off the backlight. But I can barely make things out. If I move my mouse, I can see it moving, so the screen isn't out.
-
Then it could also be a bad connection of your screen and the laptop, have you opened it recently?
-
Nope. I've never opened it.
-
Then my last thought it would be the video card, I don't see what else could possibly causing this. Is your laptop still under warranty?
-
Yeah. Its still under warranty. I guess I'll call up Xotic and see what the problem is.
-
Yeah, that's your best shot, sorry man, you will lose the laptop for some time.
-
I wonder if you have a faulty inverter. That looks like the symptoms of a busted inverter board or backlight failure.
-
Ah crap. I guess I'll wait till school gets out or something and then send it in...
Edit: Is it most likely a hardware issue. Rebooting fixes it, so can it be a software/bios issue? -
Your backlight is defect/broken, so if you have warranty then send it in repair will be quick.
Or something other is wrong with the machine, screen or LCD panel. -
The current for the display is being gradually drained away, so it must be some short circuit somewhere or a broken capacitor.
-
yep but because he can see some details in the dark, like the mouse still moving it can be the backlight or the inverter board.
-
Yes, and I wonder how difficult can be to change the inverter board.
-
hard screen needs to be disass...... complete to change the inverter board.
But if it's still warranty then let this be done by others, you keep the warranty and if something other is wrong they have the parts to fix this. -
I know, that's the best resolution, you paid the warranty afterall.
