    Hi all,

    first post... :)

Just wondering what kind of settings people use when they play bioshock?

    I've got a ifl90, with 8600m GT 512 MB, T7500, 2G ram and I run bioshock using medium settings at 1200x800 resolution.

Using 169.04 drivers at the moment.

What I find is that my idle temperature goes from about 57-60C to about 81C after maybe 45mins of playing. I think I get about 30-40 FPS using this setting. Once the temperature goes up to abotu 81C ..the FPS drops to about 20-25..but still playable.

    Is that normal?

Also, I accidentally ran a game with bad ventilation once and the GPU was overheating which then caused the laptop to shutdown.. Will that cause any permanent damage to the GPU ?

    Cheers!

I think once you overheat and damadge the GPU hundreds of artifacts occour... So youll know if youve damadges your CPU with either white dots every now and then on the screen.. Missing objects.. Wrong colours ect.

Phew! Nothing like that so far. All the 3D games I've played look good.

Another thing I've noticed though is that when I watch avi files .. there seem to be a slight lag in the video. Its only noticeable (occasionally) on fast action moviess.

Could that be due to the driver I'm using?

I'm on 169.04 at the moment.

I run FS2004 on my Ifl90 (Sager 2090 ) with the 169.04 drivers. I lock the sim at 34 FPS because better dynamic scenery loads. the temps run between 58 and 62 c when gaming. I also have a zalman cooler under it which doesn't seem to do much... maybe - 1 or 2 degrees. These seem like average gaming temps from what I have seen on this forum.

that's pretty low for a GPU when its gaming? 58-62C ?

I'm going to try another game and see if i get similar level of temperature. Basically when my GPU is idle..its around the 57-60C and when its active ..in my case (Bioshock@Medium settings) ..it goes up to a max. value of about 81C.

My shuts down exactly at 95 degrees, and most time I game at 85-89 degrees (without OC 80-85), runs quite smooth. GPU chips can take a lot of hit, just hope other elements near it aren’t suffering.

That sounds about right. I might try OC my GPU .. but at the moment, even without OC, things seems to be OK.

    3dMark06 of about 3770. :)

zippymorph, what drivers are you using to get that 3DMark score?

    My specs are as following:

    Newest BIOS (1.13)

    Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit
    T7500 2,2GHz C2D
    2x1024MB DDR667
    Intel Turbo Memory 1GB
    GeForce 8600M GT 512MB
    Samsung 160GB 7200RPM
    15.4 WSXGA+ Matte

However, the highest score I've had in 3dMark06 is about 3100 points (Sometimes as low as 2950). That's with the 169.04 drivers (Installed 169.09 last night, but haven't tested yet). What am I doing wrong? I feel I'm not using my computer to its full potential. :/

I have a similar spec machine ..the only difference is in the screen, intel turbo and the hdd.

    Here's what I know:

    158.22 drivers = 3400 3dMark06
    169.04 = 3770 3dMark06

I've also updated the Intel chipset and got the core 2 duo fix from windows update. I can't remember the name of the fix now..somethign KB865xxx. If you search the forum you can find it.

This is done w/o OC the GPU.

Games run fine with my laptop, my only problem is that when I view AVI movie files, I find that the screen sometimes shutter ( or lag). Any idea what is causing it? drivers ? or just the monitor?

hes not doing the 3dmark at right resolution because his screen cant handle it. so hes score is not "normal" or "default."

plug external monitor and run again . u will score around 3100-3200p.

default resolution must be 1280x1024 not 1280x800 like u do

I don't understand. I just run the 3dMark06 as default and got those score. currently I'm on a 1440x800 resolution but I think 3dMark06 uses a different resolution when testing it.

what u dont understand? your screen does not support the 3dmark06 default resolution what is 1280x1024 , so it changes it what-ever-ur-maximum-is , but that doesnt mean u "can" compare your results with other. your results are higher because u run on lower resolution.

ifu plugin some external monitor what can handle 1280x1024 resolution - then u will see the "right" score.

Or he can do it on his laptop to compare the 3DMark 06 score on his laptops screen to other people with an IFL90 that test it the same exact way.

You know, being in the compal threads and all.

Actually Mippoose, I have the exact same model with a different screen. My screen has a max-resolution of 1680x1050 while zippymorph's max-resolution is 1440x900. That means his screen can't view 3d-Mark in the default resolution of 1280x1024 so it defaults to a lower resolution giving him a higher 3d-Mark score.

That's how I see it, and it might make sense too. But wow, still, 600 point difference? :(

Windows6.0-KB936357-x86(microcode update to improve the reliability of systems with Intel processors).msu?
    WindowsXP-KB936357-v2-x86-ENU
Lol, don't even think to install that ****, it is major performance kill, it's just like you turn one of the cores off. A get 3dmark06 score lower 500pts with that.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...48-8240-4934-BBD8-34FB8A0FCE3B&displaylang=en

I just did a search on my laptop ..and found that windows update have installed KB936357. Any idea how I can remove it ? I tried to remove it and it gave a warning stating that numerous other programs might fail to work if its uninstalled.

ADD/Remove check "show updates" and remove it. Ignore the warning.

I have both KB936357 and KB896256. You are saying 6357 is a performance hit on the IFL90 ? What will it effect if removed ?

Try it and see. I just noticed that score in 3DMark06 degraded gratefully and removed it at once.
