Just rec'd my unit and so far am very pleased except for the built in microphone. Its sad with so much going for this notebook that the mic is so poor. Has anyone had success with a driver update or point me to a Vista setting that I've overlooked. I had hoped that the notebook would not require an external mic for video conferencing, skype, etc. but I have found the built in mic's to be practically unusable. It would be nice not to have to pack an external mic.

Built-in microphones are known for being of poor quality in comparison to an external mic. Maybe you could try an up-to-date audio driver, but it'll still probably be fairly bad. It sucks, but that is the way it is. You could always pick up a cheap mic that you can clip on to your shirt.

I had a similar problem on a hel80. builtin was not usable. My son's builtin on his asus gis works great. I was hoping that the builtin on the ifl90 was going to work better than the hel80. My IFL90 is on order and due this week.

Bump.
Anyone here have this working on their IFL90? Please add to the thread if you do or don't have the built in mic working. Hopefully, we can get a fix somehow if this issue is chronic. -
I've being using the built in mic in XP...no problems at all, it works even better than my USB Logitech Headset Mic.
Skype works OK at least...haven't tried anything else. -
Anyone got the mic's working under Vista? -
I have my 90, the microphone works fairly well, running vista home premium

so far I can sit at a "normal distance", arm's length from the mics. Driver realtek 6.0.1.5443

Update: No improvement, audio levels from the mics are still unusably lowI'll try to find the version you are using and see if that makes a difference.

I've got an HEL80 (*points at sig*), but I had the exact same problem. Odd thing for me was that the low noise problem extended to the line-in jack as well.
I was able to get acceptable levels (with a lot of noise, unfortunately) by going into the volume control in xp, and turnning on that 20 db gain switch for the mic.
These days I use a USB mic, or more often, do my Skyping on my Macbook. -
I have My IFL90 and run XP pro sp2.
The mics are pretty worthless in my case.. But would rather use a headset for that anway.
havent even tried the webcam yet.. haha.
