Went to turn on my notebook today and the screen won't turn on. It doesn't seem to load into the OS because I can push the on/off button and it will turn off immediately without holding it for 5 seconds.

The backlight on the screen doesn't come on either. Does this still mean it's the GPU?
    I plan on baking it.

Before baking motherboard, I suggest removing dvd-rom, hard drive, memory, network card, cpu, gpu 1 by 1 and see if the power will stay on. Usually the symptom like this happen when one of the computer component was not working properly or causing instability upon starting up and forcing system to shut down.

My laptop had same problem and was diagnosed the trace on motherboard appeared damaged (in-between deep layer).

    EDIT: correcting mis-spell word.

I had the same symptoms when my south bridge was damaged and had to be
    replaced.

But definetely try removing other components first, especially the memory.

last week my np2090s display was acting weird. the display would darken if it went past being vertical tilting it back towards you reactivated it. i just assumed it was a failing switch or some such. today it would going completely black after trying to boot into ubuntu 10.10.i thought it was a borked xorg.conf and after a couple times deleting the conf and trying again it went completely black and it now remains black. removed the bezel and keyboard to see if there were any loose wires or something that my have caused the failure and didnt see anything suspect.

does it sound like the display went out or something more terminal? ill try removing components individually and see what happens.

removing components didnt solve anything. read a lot about the 8600m failing after about 3yrs and people baking them with positive results. baking mine solved nothing. i didnt pay attention before and noticed that the hdd led only blinks once upon power up. bake the motherboard?

I suggest bring your laptop to nearby computer shop for free diagnose if there is one before coming down to baking motherboard. It can be display, the cord, and/or maybe other things.

I might have missed it, but did you try a external monitor? Maybe also S-Video out?

If you get anything there, it's tie to shop for either a new display, maybe also new graphics card.

    Good luck!

hirush, i didnt know shops were offering free diagnostics. hopefully ill be able to find one locally.

drcolosses, if90/np2090 does not have a video bios so you have to activate external displays with a driver. its pretty stupid. good suggestion though.

Yeah, I have an FL90, and with FN + F3 I could get a signal to the external monitor - this was before I had to replace my 8600GT with a HD3650, since then, it does not wok anymore.

But actually, you do not even need FN + F3, with e.g. Windows Display Properties, you can say to either mirror or extend the image to an external display device.

    Give it a try!

    Good luck with that!
