    Hi all,

I bought a Compal IFL90 a while back and have been loving it. Recently, however, the screen has developed an issue where the backlight will turn off if I push the screen back to an angle greater than approximately 90 degrees.

Also, I have noticed that if I open the screen slowly, I can usually get the screen to go back farther without the backlight turning off.

I'm running Vista 64 bit, have not opened up my computer since I bought it, and have never dropped it.

    Anybody know what's up?

    Thanks in advance.

    Sounds like a loose cable.

Yep, a loose or crimped cable is most likely. You may be able to correct that yourself, if you feel comfortable doing a little disassembling to access the LCD cable.

If you're still on warranty, it might be best if you contact the vendor for advice/permission before you remove any part.

Agreed, you should make sure it's alright to reseat the cable yourself before attemping it. Your reseller may well walk you through the process over the phone, too, so it would be worth your time to contact them about it. Also, if you find reseating the cable doesn't help it may well require an RMA to have the factory replace the cable altogether if it's been crimped and has broken wires inside the insulation.

If you open the computer you lose the warranty.

It is a good idea to check with your reseller and your individual warranty to be sure, but in my personal experience it doesn't void your warranty to simply open the system. If anything, most factories encourage the end user to exhaust all options on their side before returning the system, since it saves shipping and labor costs.

I should also mention to keep an eye out for warranty stickers. One thing that WILL void your warranty for sure is removing stickers that clearly say they void your warranty if tampered with. Same thing goes for serial number stickers and any kind of label that's been placed over panels or components to keep them from being opened/removed.

I agree, the vendor should confirm if the OP can open the laptop without voiding the warranty.

nah you can check the cable.... as long as you feel you can be careful and will not break anything then they will never even know you did it. you can try the connector right under the keyboard first and if that isnt the issue (which it prob is) then you simply remove the 6 rubber screw covers around the lcd then that very easily unsnaps off once the screws are out. then there are 4 screws on both sides of the lcd. unscrew those and you will see where the cable should be plugged into the lcd. and also check the inverter connector. and for this you still need to remove the plastic bezel from around the lcd but no need to remove the lcd..
